Biney Reaches Milestone in Softball’s Setbacks to Worcester State

Nina Murphy-Cook

WORCESTER – Senior Dakota Smith-Porter (Montague, MA) connected on a two-run homer in the top of the seventh of game one and finished the night 5-for-7 with an RBI and three runs scored as Worcester State took two from host WPI in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Rooftop Field. WPI senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) legged out a single for her 200th career hit in the top of the seventh in game one.

The Lancers improve to 7-8 with their fourth and fifth consecutive win and halt the Engineers (17-7) six-game winning streak.

Worcester State trailed 2-1 heading into the seventh inning. Sophomore Kaiulani Ennis (Swansea, MA) tripled in a run before scoring on a hard line drive back to the pitcher by senior Sydney Despres (Sterling, MA). Smith-Porter followed with what proved to be the game-winning swing.

Biney notched her milestone hit with one out in the home portion of the frame. Senior Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA), the Division III active stolen base leader also joined the 200 hit club earlier this year, followed with another single. Junior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) plated both with a two-out single to center. A ground out ended the game.

The Engineers plated a run in each of the first two innings. Murphy-Cook stole third and scored thanks to a miscue. Freshman Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA) added a two-out RBI single down the left field line. Worcester State broke through with an RBI ground out by sophomore Becky Brandeberry (Phillipston, MA) in the sixth.

Murphy-Cook batted 2-for-2 with two walks, three stolen bases and two runs scored. Wood added two RBI while seniors RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) and Katie Chagami (Waipahu, HI), as well as sophomore Cassie Graca (Somerset, MA) each stole a base. Senior Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) struck out six in six-plus innings before handing the ball to freshman Nicole Kuberka (Los Angeles, CA)

Smith-Porter went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, a pair of RBI and a run scored. Freshman Samantha Stake (Worcester, MA) swiped a bag for the guests. Junior Rachel Frisch (Worcester, MA) struck out three in the complete-game victory.

Sophomore Kristen Huston (Spencer, MA) drew a four-pitch bases-loaded walk for the 1-0 lead in the second. Ennis scored on a miscue, senior Kaci Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) walked to push Despres across the dish and junior Katie Polselli (Charlton, MA) lifted a sacrifice fly to center as the Lancers increased the advantage to 4-0 in the third. Graca singled in the final run of the evening with a hit to right in the bottom of the sixth.

May and Graca led the Engineers with two hits each. Sophomore Leila Camplese (Tewksbury, MA) contributed with a double as Biney and Graca each stole a base. Sophomore Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) struck out six in five innings of relief.

Despres and Smith-Porter each batted 2-for-4 and Ennis walked twice. Sophomore pitcher Carly Zielinski (Monson, MA) went the distance for Worcester State

WPI is slated to head down Park Ave for a Thursday NEWMAC twinbill at Clark beginning at 3pm. The Lancers host Rhode Island College Thursday at 4pm.
