McCasland and Wood Brilliant as Softball Takes Two From Coast Guard

New London, CT --- Freshman Hailey McCasland (Wrentham, MA) went 3-for-3 in both games while senior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) was 3-for-3 in the nighcap and totaled three home runs on the day as WPI held off Coast Guard, 15-10, in game one and ended the second game early with an 11-1 (5 inn.) triumph in a NEWMAC softball doubleheader Friday afternoon. Sophomore Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) allowed one run on six hits and zero walks while striking out four in the complete-game victory in game two.

The Engineers, who have eclipsed 20 wins every season under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Whitney Goldstein, improves to 21-7 overall and 11-1 in conference play. The Bears drop to 16-14 overall and 6-6 in the NEWMAC.

McCasland also accounted for an RBI and three runs scored as Wood drove in three and scored twice. Junior Cassie Graca (Somerset, MA) as also enjoyed a three-hit game with a double, a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) batted 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored as seniors Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH) and Kylie Juarez (Elk Grove, CA) each went 2-for-5. Sophomore Brittany Bolster (North Kingstown, RI) added a pinch-hit two-run single. Junior Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) struck out four in 6 2/3 for WPI.

Sophomore Charlee Kraiss (Lake Havasu City, AZ) led the Bears with three hits, followed by junior Courtney McKenna (Sparta, NJ), junior Audrey Bartz (Arlington, VA) and freshman Maggie Perez (Granada Hills, CA) with two apiece. Bartz (home run) and Perez (double, grand slam) totaled three extra base hits. Sophomore Sydney Arendt (Manistee, MI) and junior Julia Ferris (Falls Church, VA) each tossed at least three innings for Coast Guard.

WPI got on the board first on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Nicole Kuberka (Los Angeles, CA). Graca then hit an RBI single to give the Engineers a 2-0 lead after half an inning. Ambrosino hit a two-run homer as the Engineers extended their lead 4-0 in the second. In the top of the third, McCasland hit an RBI single to give WPI a 5-0 advantage.

Kraiss had an RBI single to put the Bears up on the board, sending junior Claire Hurley (Waterford, CT) home as Coast Guard trailed 5-1 heading into the fourth.

WPI scored six more runs in the top of the fifth, including a three-run homer by Wood to extend the Engineers lead, 11-1. The Bears, looking to avoid the early ending, responded with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth including a grand slam by Perez to bring the Bears within two, 11-9. Bolster then hit a two-run single to increase WPI's lead by four, 13-9, in the top of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Graca hit a two-run homer to give WPI a 15-9 advantage.

Bartz hit her third home run of the season to give the Bears one more run with the 15-10 final.

Wood (3-for-3, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 runs) opened the second game with a two-run double to take a 2-0 lead for WPI. In the top of the second Ambrosino (2-for-3, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs) hit an RBI single to extend the Engineers lead 3-0.

Junior Kayla Sowers (Rocklin, CA) put the Bears on the board with an RBI single to shortstop to cut the deficit, 3-1.

WPI scored eight runs, capped by Wood's third round-tripper of the day, in the top of the third to extend their lead to the 11-1 final.

Junior Carly Hattman (Egg Harbor, NJ) recorded a pair of hits as Kraiss and Bartz each doubled. The duo of Arendt and Ferris teamed up once again in the circle, this time to total three strikeouts.

The Engineers entertain Smith at noon and the Bears host Wellesley at 1pm tomorrow.
