Medford, MA --- Sophomore Morgan Bolduk (Vernon, CT) batted 2-for-4, including a solo home run, to go with a pair of RBI while also striking out four in the complete-game effort as Eastern Connecticut State posted a 6-3 victory over WPI in the 2019 NCAA Division III Softball Medford Regional opener Friday at Spicer Field.

The Warriors will face host No. 20 Tufts tomorrow at noon while the Engineers and St. Joseph (CT) will follow. If the Crimson and Gray defeat the Blue Jays, they will take on the loser of the ECSU-Tufts matchup in the third game of the day.

Bolduk, the Little East Pitcher of the Year and reigning NFCA Division III Pitcher of the Week, began the scoring with the home run to left in the top of the third. WPI loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning. After freshman Hailey McCasland (Wrentham, MA) was gunned down by junior centerfielder Sabrina LeMere (North Branford, CT) at the plate, WPI junior Cassie Graca (Somerset, MA), facing a 3-2 count with two away, singled up the middle to chase home sophomore Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA) and senior Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) for the 2-1 advantage.

The lead was short lived as freshman Laura Zenk (Hermon, ME) drew a two-out bases-loaded walk and Bolduk followed with an RBI single in the fourth. Freshman Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange, CT) added another Warrior run with a solo shot in almost the exact same spot as Bolduk earlier in the game in the fifth.

Junior Leila Camplese (Tewksbury, MA) brought the Engineers back within a run with a two-out double down the right field line in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven, CT) pushed the lead back to a pair with a 2-RBI single down the right field line in the top of the seventh. The Engineers then went down in order in the home half of the frame.

The Warriors were patient at the plate and saw junior Sara Pisanelli (Wallingford, CT) win a 13-pitch at-bat with a two-out double in the first. Freshman Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) drew the lone WPI walk after a nine-pitch battle with Bolduk to begin the bottom of the first.

Senior Kylie Juarez (Elk Grove, CA) and McCasland each batted 2-for-3 for WPI as Juarez and Camplese doubled. Graca (2 RBI) and senior Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH) chipped in with a stolen base. Sophomore Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) struck out three in the first four innings while junior Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) fanned one in the final three.

Matyasovsky also had a pair of hits for Eastern Connecticut in the form of a double and a home run. Pisanelli doubled and Bolduk homered and LeMere chipped in with a sacrifice hit.
