Wood, Ambrosino, Martin and Tognari Guide Softball to Sweep of Occidental

Caraline Wood

Los Angeles, CA --- Day two of the 2020 softball season featured a pair of run-rule victories for the WPI softball team over Occidental. The Engineers took down the Tigers 9-1 in the first game of the doubleheader followed by an 11-0 five-inning victory to close the day.

Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) was 5-for-8 on the day with three doubles, five RBIs and a pair of runs scored for WPI while Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) was 3-for-4 in game two including a two-run blast in the second inning to make it a 5-0 game while also scoring three runs of her own and driving in three.

The pitching trio of Katie Martin (Bedford, NH), Jess Evans (Grafton, MA) and Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) combined to limit Occidental to just one run on the day while striking out six. Togneri pitched the six-inning game-two shutout, walking two and allowing just two hits.

The Engineers were 16-for-40 (.400) on the day with runners on base and 13-of-33 (.394) with runners in scoring position en route to the sweep.

WPI got on top 2-0 in the top of the second inning in the first game of the day after a throwing error allowed the leadoff runner Nicole Logrecco (Huntington Beach, CA) on. After a single and a wild pitch, both Brittany Bolster (North Kingstown, RI) and Logrecco scampered home on yet another throwing error by the Tigers for the 2-0 lead.

WPI added to that lead with another pair of runs in the top of the fifth when another error allowed another base runner, this time benefitting Cassie Graca (Somerset, MA) who moved all the way up to second on the play. Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA) in the next at bat bringing Graca home and then came around herself on a Wood double for the 4-0 lead.

The Crimson and Gray did the most damage in the top of the sixth, piling on five runs capped by back-to-back doubles by Wood and Ambrosino that plated four Engineers before a Gabriella Cerbo (Middletown, NJ) single and subsequent run down, provided enough time for Ambrosino to cross the plate and the insurance run that gave the Engineers the 9-1 win.

The offense kept going in the second game of the day as the Engineers tabbed a couple runs in the top of the first and then another three in the top of the second thanks to a two run blast from Ambrosino.

The top of the third brought another six runs as WPI batted around the order. A Taylor Ostrum (Tucson, AZ) single, Ambrosino single, Graca two-run double, and Cerbo two-run single accounted for the inning's runs, building the lead up to 11-0 where it would remain for the win.

WPI returns to action tomorrow with another doubleheader, this time at Redlands with first pitch slated for 4pm.
