Babson Takes a Pair from Softball in Crimson and Gray's 2021 Home Debut

WORCESTER --- On a sunny Saturday afternoon at Rooftop Field, Babson picked up a doubleheader sweep of WPI by finals of 2-0 and 4-2 in NEWMAC conference action. The games were the season opener for the Beavers and the home opener for the Engineers. 

Game 1: Babson 2, WPI 0 

Led by a 12-strikeout shutout performance by pitcher Brooke Stock (Fort Lauderdale, FL), the Beavers earned a 2-0 victory in game one on Saturday. 

Babson got on the board in the top of the first as shortstop Isabel Aguilar (Avon, CT) led off the game with a home run to the center for the 1-0 advantage. The Beavers added to the lead in the second as Stock led off with an infield single and eventually scored on a bloop hit to shallow left by Cara Harnick (Sammamish, WA) for the 2-0 edge. WPI got out of the inning as Harnick was thrown out attempting to steal second. 

WPI had a scoring chance in the bottom of the frame though after Hailey McCasland (Wrentham, MA) led off with a single to left, stole second and eventually ended on third before a strike out to end the inning. 

The Engineers also had scoring chances in the fifth and sixth, including runners on second and third in the sixth before the Beavers got out of the jam. 

Stock earned the win in the circle for Babson, moving to 1-0 as she allowed just four hits with 12 strikeouts over seven innings. Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) took the loss for WPI and dropped to 0-1 after allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven. 

Game 2: Babson 4, WPI 2 

Trailing 2-1 after the first inning, Babson rallied for the 4-2 victory win to complete the sweep of the Engineers in game two. 

In the top of the first, Aguilar singled with two outs for Babson and scored for the 1-0 lead on a slicing RBI triple to right field by Jacqueline Paul (Burlington, NJ) before the Engineers answered with a pair of runs for the 2-1 edge. The Engineers got on the board as Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA) led off with an infield single, stole second and moved to third on the wild pitch before coming around on a groundout to tie the game at 1-1. The Engineers went in front 2-1 on an RBI double to center by Nicole Logrecco (Huntington Beach, CA) that plated McCasland after she had reached on a hit by pitch. 

In the top of the sixth, Babson had the first two runners reach on base hits as Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) came in to pitch in relief of Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) for WPI. Paul drew the walk with one out to load the bases and Meinhold came back to the circle for the Engineers. Chloe Joslin (Wyoming, RI) came to the plate next for the Beavers and launched a sacrifice fly to center that scored Lexi Morris (Lexington, MA) to tie the game at 2-2. 

In the top of the seventh, Audrey Labouliere (Pipersville, PA) doubled to right to lead off the inning and advanced to third with two outs before coming home on an RBI single through the left side by Sam Burggraf (Livingston, NJ) for the 3-2 edge. Molly Hennessey (Tallahassee, FL) pinch ran for Burggraf and scored the insurance run on an Aguilar single through the left side to account for the 4-2 final. 

Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, OH) picked up the victory for the Beavers to move to 1-0 after allowing two runs and seven hits over seven innings with 10 strikeouts. Meinhold took the loss for WPI and fell to 0-2 on the year after allowing four runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and no walks. 

With the sweep, Babson moves to 2-0 overall and in NEWMAC play, while WPI drops to 0-4 overall and in the conference. 

WPI is back in action on Saturday, April 10 for a NEWMAC doubleheader at Clark beginning atnoon. Babson returns to the field on Saturday, April 3 at Coast Guard for a doubleheader at noon.
