Meinhold, Martin Pitch Softball to First Wins of the Season

WORCESTER --- Freshman Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) threw a complete game shutout and struck out nine batters to help WPI collect their first win of the season, a 3-0 win over Clark in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball action on Saturday afternoon.

In game two, senior Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) worked five scoreless innings with six strikeouts as the Engineers swept the doubleheader with a 10-0 run-rule victory.

Game 1: WPI 3, Clark 0

Meinhold was phenomenal in the circle for the Engineers. She threw 106 pitches, 71 of them for strikes. She allowed just three hits, all of them singles, while earning her first collegiate victory (1-2).

Senior Marissa Gonzales (Oakley, CA) was 2-3 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored.

The Engineers got rolling early when Gonzales led off the game with a double. She moved to third on a single by Nicole Logrecco (Huntington Beach, CA), and scored on an error to give WPI a 1-0 lead.

Senior Brittany Bolster (North Kingstown, RI) doubled their advantage when she doubled home Kallie Case (Phoenix, AZ), who had led off the top of the fourth inning with a walk.

Gonzalez chased home junior Hailey McCasland (Wrentham, MA) with a double in the top of the seventh. McCasland reentered for Gabriella Cerbo (Middletown, NJ), who had doubled in a pinch hitting appearance.

Samantha Crowley (Middleboro, MA), Samantha Restrepo-Stier (Davie, FL), and Natalie Stilwell (Beverly, MA) each collected hits for the Cougars.

Isabella DiOrio (Lincoln, RI) also threw a complete game, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and two walks. DiOrio struck out two batters in the circle for Clark.

Game 2: WPI 10, Clark 0

The Engineers outhit the Cougars 12-2, with ten different WPI hitters reaching base safely. Logrecco was 2-4 with a pair of runs batted in for WPI, who also saw ten different players score runs.

Logrecco singled home a run in the top of the fourth and doubled home another in the sixth. That made it 4-0 WPI after the Engineers scored two runs in the third on an error and a sacrifice fly by Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH).

Logrecco's double jump-started a seven-run sixth inning, in which WPI collected six hits and took advantage of two Clark errors.

Alicia Salvalzo (Hudson, NH) had an RBI triple in the inning, and Skylar O'Connell (North Attleboro, MA) and Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) each had RBI hits as well.

Martin picked up her first win of the year (1-0) by allowing just two hits and one walk in her six strong innings. Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) closed the door with a scoreless sixth inning.

Both Cougar hits came off the bat of Crowley, who was 2-3 in the loss.

Nicole Buckley (Hazlet, NJ) took the loss for Clark, allowing eight earned runs over five and two-thirds innings pitched.

Next Saturday the Engineers (2-4) head to Emerson for a 12:00 PM doubleheader.  Clark (0-4) has a week off before they travel to Springfield on April 24th.
