La Verne, CA --- The WPI softball team dropped a doubleheader on the road at La Verne (CA) on Tuesday night. The Leopards won by scores of 4-1 and 14-7 to improve to 10-2 on the year, while the Engineers even their season mark to 2-2.
After two scoreless innings, La Verne (10-2) struck first, as an RBI double in the bottom of the third from Ashley Rodriguez (West Covina, CA) put the hosts on top, 1-0.
WPI answered in the top of the fourth, knotting the game at 1-1. Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) led off the inning with a double down the right field line, later scoring on a Shaina Lazarus (Thousand Oaks, CA) single to center. The Engineers threatened as Lazarus stole second and third, but a strike out stranded the runner.
In the bottom of the fifth, WPI got two quick outs before La Verne rallied for three unearned runs to open a 4-1 advantage. Haylee Hsiah (Torrance, CA) had a pair of RBI and a run scored in the frame for the Leopards.
The Engineers had just one baserunner the final three innings, as La Verne finished out the win.
Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) was saddled with the loss, despite allowing just one earned run. She threw six, giving up five hits with three strikeouts. Rachel Rubio (Long Beach, CA) got the win for La Verne, going the distance, allowing just one run on four hits with six K's.
A high scoring affair ended in La Verne's favor, as the hosts wrapped up the sweep with a 14-7 win in game two.
WPI was hampered by fielding woes in the bottom of the first inning, allowing seven La Verne runs. Katheryn Navarro (Anaheim, CA) and Alyssa Campbell (La Mirada, CA) each belted homeruns, as the hosts went up 7-0.
The Engineers got one back in the top of the second, after Kallie Case (Arlington, VA) singled and was driven home on a groundout from Jocelyn Diaz (Reedley, CA). However, the La Verne offense rolled in the bottom of the inning, plating four more runs off of five hits, taking an 11-1 advantage after two.
WPI chipped away, scoring a pair in the top of the third to cut the lead to 11-3. Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) led off the frame with a single to center and was brought home on a single from Pritchard. Lazarus later reached on a fielders choice and was knocked in off the bat of Alicia Salvalzo (Hudson, NH).
Three more WPI runs followed in the top of the fourth. Walks issued to Stephanie Bishop (Milford, NH), Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA), and Ambrosino all came around to score. Case had the big hit in the inning, doubling down the left field line to plate two, cutting the La Verne lead to 11-6.
WPI added a run in the top of the sixth, as a sac fly from Lazarus scored Ambrosino to make it 11-7. However, three-run bottom of the sixth from La Verne put the game out of reach for the Engineers, as the Leopards took it, 14-7.
Meghan Urakawa (Chandler, AZ) got the start combining, allowing four runs off three hits. Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) tossed two thirds of an inning in relief, allowing three hits, three runs, none earned. Pritchard went five innings, allowing seven runs, none of which were earned.
Wednesday's originally scheduled doubleheader at Redlands has been cancelled. The Engineers however will still be in action tomorrow as they have picked up a 2pm ET twinbill at NAIA power Hope International.
