Pritchard Notches Four Hits as Softball Splits Doubleheader at Whittier

Alicia Salvalzo - WPI Softball 2022

Whittier, CA --- The WPI softball team continued its spring break trip with a split on the road at Whittier on Friday afternoon. The Engineers (3-5) took game one, 5-4, before Whittier (8-5) won the nightcap, 9-4.

WPI worked from behind but got an unearned run in the top of the seventh to squeak out the 5-4 victory.

Whittier struck first, plating four runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Lindsey Perry (Corona, CA) drove in the first run of the inning on a single to right. After a groundout, Marissa Flynn (Covina, CA) laced a two-out homerun that plated three, making it 4-0 Poets.

The Engineers cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the top of the third. After two quick outs, WPI rallied, beginning with a single to center from Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA). Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) followed with an RBI double, and Shaina Lazarus (Thousand Oaks, CA) drove in the second run of the inning on a single, making it 4-2.

WPI tied things up in the top of the fifth, again using a two-out rally. A one-out walk from Pritchard was advanced to second after a Lazarus single. After a fly out, a big double from Alicia Salvalzo (Hudson, NH) plated a pair to knot the game at 4-4.

The Engineers got the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh, as a one-out double from Kallie Case (Arlington, VA) came around to score on a Whittier error. In the bottom of the frame, Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) pitched around a single and a walk, getting the final Poets batter to fly out to end the game.

Martin got the win, going the distance, allowing four runs on six hits. For Whittier, Jamie Garvey (Wilmington, CA) threw 5.2 innings giving up four runs, on seven hits with five walks. Riley Garcia (Fullerton, CA) was saddled with the loss, allowing one unearned run on one hit with two strikeouts.

Whittier had a pair of four-run innings, exploding for 14 hits en route to the 9-4 victory in game two.

In the bottom of the fourth, WPI got two outs before the Poets strung together four singles to take a lead. Yolanda Oregel (Anaheim, CA) drove in two runs during the four-run inning, putting Whittier on top, 4-0.

WPI got one back in the top of the fifth, as a leadoff single from Salvalzo came around to score on an infield single from Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA). However, the Poets tacked on four more in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-1 lead. Oregel again got the big hit in the inning, driving in a pair on a single up the middle.

The Engineers got one back in the top of the sixth, picking up two hits in the inning and loading the bases. However, a single from Jocelyn Diaz (Reedley, CA) scoring Salvalzo was the only run that WPI could get to cross the plate, as a groundout ended a bases-loaded threat.

Whitter added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with Jocelyn Signoretti (La Palma, CA) doubling to make it 9-2.

WPI got two runs in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on a Whittier error, but the Engineers couldn't make up the deficit, setting the final to 9-4.

Pritchard got the loss, going four innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Lazarus ate up two innings, allowing five runs on six hits. It was Garcia again for Whittier, as the hurler tossed seven innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits with six strikeouts in the win.
