Jocelyn Diaz - WPI Softball 2022

WORCESTER -- WPI softball split with visiting Coast Guard in a NEWMAC doubleheader on Friday afternoon on Rooftop Field. The Engineers' bats took over game one in a 9-5 win, while the Bears used a seventh-inning rally to take game two, 3-2. WPI evens its season mark at 11-11 (1-3 NEWMAC), while Coast Guard moves to 6-6 (2-2 NEWMAC).

GAME ONE

Jocelyn Diaz (Reedley, CA) had four hits with two RBI and Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) also drove in a pair of runs, as the WPI offense shined in a 9-5 win.

Coast Guard got on the board first, as a lead-off single from Selena Serna (San Diego, CA) came around to score on an infield single from Isabelle Shroyer (Maryville, OH) in the top of the first. WPI answered in the bottom half of the inning with a basehit from Alex Sheehan (Marion, MA) scoring on a Jocelyn Diaz (Reedley, CA) single to left to tie it up at 1-1.

In the bottom of the second, WPI took advantage of a pair of Coast Guard errors to plate three. Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) singled and Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) reached on an error to put runners on first and second with two outs. Alex Sheehan (Marion, MA) then cleared the bases with a bunt single to third, as three runs scored on a throwing error.

The Engineers made it 7-1 with three more in the bottom of the third, again on a two-out rally. Diaz, Kallie Case (Arlington, VA), and Ambrosino all singled to load the bases, before Stephanie Bishop (Milford, NH) worked a walk to score Diaz. Russell then got the big hit of the inning, singling to right center to plate Case and Ambrosino.

Another messy defensive inning for Coast Guard allowed WPI to make it 8-1 in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Russell worked a walk and stole second. Sheehan then reached on a throwing error, which allowed Russell to score from second. Another error from the Bears on the next batter put two runners on, but a line-out ended the frame.

Coast Guard cut into the advantage in the top of the sixth, loading the bases on a Shroyer fielder's choice, a Katie Becker (Jacksonville, NC) single, and a Lillia Farlow (Carrollton, TX) walk. WPI's Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) got the next batter to strikeout, but Kayla Yoshioka Montalvo (Lomita, CA) singled to right to score two, as the Bears made it 8-3.

The Engineers got one back in the bottom of the sixth, as a solo homerun from Diaz made it 9-3.

Coast Guard rallied for two in the top of the seventh. A lead-off walk to Veronica Krystofik (Colchester, CT) scored on a homerun from Mariah Dewey (Campbell, C) to cut the lead to 9-5. After a single and a fielder's choice, the Bears had runners on first and third with two outs, but Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) got the final batter of the game to ground out to close the victory.

WPI's Martin got the win, her seventh of the season, throwing six innings, allowing three runs off eight hits with five strikeouts. Togneri picked up the save, tossing two-thirds of an inning, not allowing a hit.

Coast Guard's Shroyer took the loss, allowing seven runs, four earned, off 10 hits in four innings of work. Amanda Moore (McLean, VA) came on in relief, throwing two innings, allowing one earned run off of two hits.

GAME TWO

Trailing 2-1, Coast Guard scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and then shut WPI down in order in the bottom of the frame to seal the win for the visitors.

WPI struck first putting up a solo run in the bottom of the third inning. Ambrosino manufactured the run, leading off with a walk, before stealing second. After a line-out, she stole third and scored on a throwing error to make it 1-0 Engineers.

Coast Guard tied it up in the top of the fourth, as a Dewey triple came around to score on a single from Christine Carey (San Diego, CA).

The Engineers quickly responded, going up 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. A Case double left off the frame, but back-to-back pop-ups had her on second with two outs. Russell then singled up the middle to score Case to make it 2-1 WPI.

The Bears scored two runs off two hits and a WPI error in the top of the seventh, taking their first lead of the game at 3-2. Dewey singled before a WPI error put runners on the corners with no one out. After a strikeout,  Shroyer tied the game with a single to center to score Dewey, while Jackie Carter (Dover, NH) advanced to third on the play. Coast Guard then scored the go-ahead run on a sac fly off the bat of Farlow, scoring Carter.

In the bottom half of the inning, Coast Guard's Moore sat WPI down in order, striking out two in the frame to earn the win. She threw seven, allowing two runs on two hits with five strikeouts.

Togneri took the loss going 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts.

WPI will have to wait an extra day to finish its homestand, as the Engineers' doubleheader against Wheaton has been moved to Sunday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon. Coast Guard continues NEWMAC play tomorrow, hosting Emerson in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
