Ambrosino and Russell Earn Spots on CoSIDA Softball Academic All-District Team

CoSIDA All District Team - WPI Softball 2022

WORCESTER -- WPI senior Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) and sophomore Sydney Russell (Arlington, MA) have garnered CoSIDA Softball Academic All-District First Team accolades, as voted upon by sports information directors from Massachusetts and Maine. The duo is now under consideration for Academic All-America accolades.

Ambrosino, a four-year starter for the Engineers at shortstop, earned the award as an infielder for the third straight season.  This past weekend, the senior was named to the Glenside Regional All-Tournament. She helped the Engineers go 3-0 and capture the regional title by parlaying a pair of hits, five walks, and six stolen bases into five runs scored.  For the season, Ambrosino is fourth in the NEWMAC in runs scored (35) and stolen bases (19) and tied for fifth in triples (3).

The biomedical engineering and electrical and computer engineering double major graduated this month with a perfect 4.00 GPA.  Ambrosino is a Crimson Key Tour Guide, an Academic Resources Center tutor, and the ACCESS President. Her IQP Project in Albania was titled "Identifying Opportunities for Women in the Western Balkan Wastewater Sector" and her MQP Project helped developed a smart motorcycle helmet device.

Ambrosino joins Ama Biney '18 as the only WPI Softball student-athletes named Academic All-District three straight seasons.

Russell also was selected to the Glenside Regional All-Tournament team.  The centerfielder batted .400, totaling five stolen bases, and score a run in each of the three regional contests last weekend.  Russell is the NEWMAC leader in runs scored (44) and stolen bases (26) while second in hits (57).  The leadoff hitter made just one error all season while starting all 47 games this spring.

Russell boasts a 3.77 GPA while majoring in biomedical engineering.  Her Humanities & Arts Component is art.

WPI is 33-14 after winning the NEWMAC Tournament two weekends ago and an NCAA regional crown last weekend.  The Engineers will host Tufts this weekend in a best-of-three Super Regional on Rooftop Field.  Game one is Friday at 2 pm.
