Men's Swimming and Diving Wins Third Straight City Championship

Worcester, MA --- Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA) swept the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events to lead WPI to its third consecutive Worcester City Championship at Holy Cross that concluded on Saturday evening.  The senior shared the Justin Ferris Male Swimmer of the Meet honor, while also setting a new meet record in the 50-yard freestyle. Casey Hayes (Arundel, ME) was named the Whit Griffith Male Diver of the Meet.

The team win is the sixth overall in the 10 year history of the event. WPI scored 394.5 points as a team, while Holy Cross tallied 368.5 and Clark posted 284.

Hayes swept the one-meter and three-meter dives for the Engineers. The freshman amassed 186.90 points to win the three meter on Friday night and 215.62 in the one-meter on Saturday.

Chiang swam a 21.95 and shaved .22 off his previous 50-yard freestyle mark set in 2009. In the 100-yard freestyle the senior took 48.78 to complete, while finishing the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.19.

In the first session, the team of Chiang, Andrew Lybarger (Decatur, GA), Alford Green (Portmore, Jamaica) and Mason Ruffing (Stone Mountain, GA) nearly bested their own meet record in the 200-yard freestyle relay as they won with a 1:29.58, just .77 seconds off the 2009 mark. The same quartet would also win the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:17.07 on Saturday.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Ruffing, Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA), Lybarger and Chiang won with a time of 1:42.58, while Lybarger, Chiang, Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) and Ruffing posted a a second place time of 3:45.46 in the 400-yard medley relay.

Lybarger swept the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly events with times of 52.68 and 2:00.29, while Ruffing made it a one-two WPI finish in the 200-yard event with a 2:05.27. Ruffing also finished second in both the 200-yard IM (2:04.55), and 200-yard backstroke (2:00.89).

In the 1650-yard freestyle, Nick Catano (Goffstown, NH) swam to third place finish as he completed his race in 17:59.90. The senior also posted a second place time in the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.75).

Rounding out the top finishers were Carl Curran (Keene, NH) in the 400-yard IM (2nd - 4:37.50), James Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY) in the 100-yard backstroke (3rd - 58.29), Cullen O'Brien (Bar Harbor, ME) in the 100-yard breaststroke (4th - 1:08.53) and Cakounes in the 200-yard breaststroke (5th - 2:30.52),

Men's Swimming and Diving is back in the natatorium when they host UMass Dartmouth in a 6:30pm dual meet on Thursday night.
