Pair of Records Fall for Women’s Swimming and Diving at NEWMAC Championships

South Hadley, MA --- Alana Aubin (Taunton, MA) broke the school record with a 25.48 in the 50-yard freestyle and aided a pair of relay teams to eighth place finishes as WPI women's swimming and diving competed on the first day of the NEWMAC Championships on Friday.  The Engineers ended day one of the NEWMAC Championships in eighth place with 55 points. Springfield currently leads the meet with 276.5 points.

The foursome of Aubin, Jess Lopez (Palmer, MA), Alexandra Sanz-Guerrero (Ann Arbor, MI) and Sarah Dinwoodie (East Greenbwich,. RI) set a new WPI record with a time of 1:43.02 in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Kelin Song (Providence, RI), Kaitlyn Kelley (Salt Lake City, UT), Taylor Briseno (Mansfield, MA) and Samantha Sargalski (Windsor, CT) came home 15th as they posted a 1:46.26 time.

Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) reached the evening program and touched the pad 16th in the 500-yard freestyle as she raced to a 5:19.74.  Aubin placed 20th while setting the new school standard in the 50 freestyle and Heather Peruffo (Poughkeepsie, NY) swam a 2:20.51 in the 200-yard IM to finish 25th.    

Both Engineer teams were in the 'B' final of the 400-yard medley relay. Peruffo, Amanda Blom (Wilkes-Barre, PA), Kent and Aubin turned in a time of 4:14.17 for ninth place as Toni LaBella (Warwick, RI), Colleen Heckley (Tyngsboro, MA), Briseno and Kelley combined for a 4:21.21 time (16th).

In the diving portion of the day, Marissa Goerke (San Diego, CA) amassed 315.75 points for 15th place on the one-meter board as Hannah McCallum (Lafayette, CO) scored 277.80 points for 26th place. 

The NEWMAC women's swimming and diving championships continue on Saturday at Mount Holyoke with the middle day of the three-day event.
