Men’s Swimming and Diving Fifth at NEWMAC Championships

Cambridge, MA --- Andrew Lybarger (Decatur, GA) and Mason Ruffing (Stone Mountain, GA) led WPI as Men's Swimming and Diving placed fifth with 343 points at the NEWMAC Championships that concluded on Sunday. MIT won the team title with 1,153 points.

Ruffing finished the 200-yard backstroke in fifth as he recorded a 1:53.38 and set a new WPI record.

Lybarger won the preliminary heats of the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:54.80, and finished the finals in fourth as he improved on his time by less than two seconds (1:53.00). Also in the race was Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) who swam 1:58.40 for 10th spot. Spazzarini's mark in the finals was 7.8 seconds faster than his morning race.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA), Alford Green (Portmore, Jamaica), Ruffing and Lybarger touched the pad fourth with a 3:10.59. Coming home 12th in the event was the foursome of Khalil Badran (Beirut, Lebanon), Ben Collins (Newbury, MA), Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA) and Cullen O'Brien (Bar Harbor, ME) as they posted a 3:18.46.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Chiang grabbed 12th place (47.53), while Cakounes posted a 2:19.73 for 12th in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Diver Casey Hayes (Arundel, ME) scored 301.00 for 13th on the three-meter board.

Nick Catano (Goffstown, NH) and Carl Curran (Keene, NH) earned points for the Engineers as they finished 15th (17:23.24) and 16th (17:30.53) in the grueling 1,650-yard freestyle.

The 2010-11 men's swimming and diving season is now complete.
