
Worcester, MA --- Five individuals posted second place finishes Friday night as the WPI men's swimming team competed against Division II power Bridgeport in a dual meet at Assumption. The Purple Knights, who are ranked number one in the country in the NCAA Division II Avidasports Collegiate Swimming Rankings, took the meet by a score of 51-42.
Carl Curran (Keene, NH) led the way with a pair of second place finishes in the distance freestyle events. The senior posted times of 9:52.82 in the 1000-yard event and 5:24.22 in the 500-yard. Teammate Keahi Goodale (Kailua-Kona, HI) was third in both events with times of 11:09.32 and 5:30.28.
Andrew Lybarger (Decatur, GA) capped a strong day with a second place showing in the 100-yard butterfly (53.68) and a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.27). Other second place performances were turned in by Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) in the 200-yard IM (2:14.54), James Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY) in the 100-yard backstroke (58.73) and Keith Gagnon (West Hartford, CT) in the 100-breastroke (1:07.40).
Sophomore Joon-Ho Lee (Hampstead, NH) clocked third place times in a pair of events. He touched the wall in 2:17.49 in the 200-yard IM and posted a 1:01.21 in the 100-yard backstroke. Other third place individual finishes included sophomore Ben Collins (Newbury, MA) in the 50-yard freestyle (23.92), freshman Ben List (Bedford, MA) in the 100-yard butterfly (57.90) and graduate student Nick Catano (Goffstown, MA) in 100-yard freestyle (52.21).
The Engineers also registered a pair of second place finishes in the relays. The 400-yard medley relay swam a 3:51.03 while the 200-yard freestyle relay posted a time of 1:34.87.
WPI heads right back to the pool Saturday, traveling to NEWMAC foe Coast Guard for a noon meet.
