Casha Off to a Fast Start at NEWMACs for Women's Swimming and Diving

Cambridge, MA --- Nysa Casha (Andover, MA), Jess Lopez (Palmer, MA), Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA) and Amanda Konieczny (West Springfield, MA) established a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.53 to lead the WPI's women's swimming and diving team at the first day of the NEWMAC Championships.  The Engineers totaled 54 Friday and are currently in 10th place. 

Casha set a new school standard in the 50-yard freestyle leading off the relay in the morning (24.93), only to break her own record in the finals with a time of 24.66.  The sophomore was also swam second on the 400-yard IM relay and teamed with Heather Peruffo (Poughkeepsie, NY), Taylor Briseno (Mansfield, MA) and Kent to place eighth (4:09.79) after finishing seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay. 

Kent qualified for the consolation finals and placed 16th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:22.93). Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) narrowly missed the finals in the 3-meter diving.  The freshman amassed 420.20 points to finish 10th.  Kelin Song (Providence, RI) took home 22nd in the 200-yard IM (2:19.14) while Alexandrea Sanz-Guererro (Ann Arbor, MI) clocked a 26.93 in the 50-yard freestyle to post the best Engineer finish (35th).       

The NEWMAC women's swimming and diving championships continue on Saturday at MIT with day two of the three-day event.  Preliminaries are at 10am with finals at 6pm.
