Women's Swimming and Diving Makes Home Debut In New England Invitational

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) paced the Engineers in their second meet of the season, finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.51 and fifth in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:53.74 to help the host put forth a strong showing at the non-scoring New England Invitational. 

Freshman Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) one-upped Martin with three top five finishes, grabbing, fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.84), fourth in the 400-yard IM (4:49.14) – one spot ahead of Martin – and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.03). Day and Martin also both swam in multiple relays apiece. 

Another newcomer, Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) gave WPI a threat in the distance events with a fifth-place finish in the 10,000-yard freestyle (11:20.90). 

Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT) was sixth in the 50-yard breaststroke, coming in at 32.92, while freshman Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) finished 10th (33.55). 

Grant had another 10th-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle as well (58.37). 

Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH) finished the 50-yard backstroke in 29.61, which was good for eighth place, while Nysa Casha (Andover, MA) similarly finished eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.18). 

Casha, Day, Tori Claverie (Derry, NH) and Martin combined for fourth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:41.59), WPI's top relay finish of the meet. 

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Casha, Day, Martin and Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) came in fifth (3:49.98). 

The 200-yard medley relay team of Patterson, Eggleston, Casha and Martin combined for a sixth-place result, with a time of 1:55.65. Meanwhile, the same group finished seventh in the 400-yard medley relay (4:15.88). 

WPI Women's Swimming and Diving is back in action next Sunday at home against Babson, Smith and Brandeis.
