Men’s Swimming and Diving Enjoys Success on Day 3 of NCAA Championships

David Smallwood

Shenandoah, Texas --- David Smallwood (Bangor, ME) set the school record in the 200-yard butterfly and the 800-yard freestyle relay team garnered honorable mention All-America status to highlight WPI's performances on day three of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday.

Smallwood began the day by clocking a 1:51.20 to finish 23rd overall. Andrew Lybarger had owned the previous 200-yard butterfly record (1:51.55) since 2012. Alex Powers (Glocester, RI), meanwhile, finished 35th in the 100-yard backstroke (51.06).

The 800-yard freestyle relay capped the morning session with a time of 6:46.68, good for eighth; however, because it was a timed final, the quartet of Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA), Powers, Smallwood and Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) had to wait until the last race of the evening for their final placing of 16th overall.

The foursome will close out the competition with the 400-yad freestyle relay while Bauer will contest the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday.
