200-Yard Medley Relay Propels Men’s Swimming and Diving Past Bentley

WORCESTER -- The WPI men's swimming and diving 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), junior Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY), freshman Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and junior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) claimed the first men's event of the 2015-16 campaign and all four went on to deliver a pair of individual victories as WPI defeated Division II Bentley, 183.5-108.5, Wednesday night in the season opener for both squads. 

The quartet completed the relay in a time of 1:35.47 while senior Alex Powers (North Scituate, RI), junior Tim Petri (Eksjo, Sweden), junior Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY) and senior Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA) came in second with a time of 1:38.90. Jack Bauer captured the 50-yard backstroke (24.79) and 50-yard freestyle (21.89) as Kelleher swept the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke with times of 28.04 and 1:00.70. Perry took the 50- (23.43) and 100-yard (52.76) butterfly and Andrew Bauer collected wins in the 100- (47.32) and 200-yard (1:46.50) freestyle. 

Junior Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA) (50 back - 26.14), Powers (200 free - 1:48.01), Hughes (100 free - 49.97), Petri (50 breast – 28.09, 100 breast - 1:00.91), and sophomore Cam Back (St. Louis, MO) (100 fly – 53.82) were all runners up to their Engineer teammates as sophomore Shane Bell (Sun Valley, CA) (50 breast – 29.61) and freshman Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) (100 breast – 1:02.84) helped complete the Crimson and Gray 1-2-3 sweep in their events. Powers headlined a trio of Boynton Hillers in the 100-yard backstroke with a winning-time of 53.67. He was followed by Jack Bauer (53.81) and Houghton (56.06) in second and third. MacDonald touched the wall first in the 200-yard IM (2:01.04) as Gallant followed in second (2:01.15) and Kelleher was third (2:06.29). sophomore Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) also posted a third place showing with a 24.64 in the 50-yard butterfly. 

Bentley rookie Ryan McGeary (Paramus, NJ) handily won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:32.92) and claimed the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.56) as senior Colton Bridge (Tolland, CT) swept the diving events with a 268.80 on the 1-meter board and 265.73 on the 3-meter. Sophomores James Macfarlane (Ijamsville, MD) and Sam Carley (Trumbull, CT) were second (10:32.71) and third (10:42.02) in the longer race as Macfarlane also came home third (5:06.97) in the shorter event. Sophomore Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) was second (218.85, 206.85) and sophomore Ryan Coran (Potomac, MD) was third (149.78, 172.20) on the 1- and 3-meter board, respectively. 

Andrew Bauer, Hughes, Powers and Elsayed capped the night with the quickest time in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.44). 

WPI is idle until it hosts the New England Invitational on November 7.
