Women's Swimming and Diving Claim 10 Victories in 155-118 Road Win at Hartwick

Oneonta, NY --- Kristen Bender (Simi Valley, CA) swept the diving events and Jennifer Day (Chelmsford, MA), Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY), Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT), Emily Martin (Penfield, NY), Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) and Sofia de Oliveira (Portland, ME) all posted individual victories as WPI Women's Swimming and Diving defeated host Harwick Saturday afternoon by a score of 155-118. 

In addition to the eight individual triumphs, the 200 medley and 400 yard freestyles also touched the wall first with Martin taking part in both wins. 

Martin took part in three Engineers victories, including 50-yard freestyle in 25.72 seconds to hold off Hartwick's Madeline Hayes, who came in 0.18 seconds later. 

The standout senior also helped WPI to the top time in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Martin, de Oliveira, Day and Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) combined for a time of 3:46.93. Martin then joined forces with Eggleston, Morgan and Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NY) in the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:54.03). 

Bender was a multi-winner as well, posting the top score in the 1-meter dive with a score of 280.35, followed by a point total of 272.40 the 3-meter dive. 

WPI had the top three finishers in an impressive showing in the 100-yard backstroke as Morgan won in 1:02.85, followed by Patterson (1:03.69) and Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) in third with a time of 1:03.94. 

The Engineers similarly dominate the 200-yard breaststroke event as Grant touched first in 2:36.60, followed by Stephanie Marcucci (Dingmans Ferry, PA) in second (2:38.42) and Kelly Martin (Penfield, NY) in third (2:42.43). 

Day won the marathon 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:19.11, followed by Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) in second (18:32.04). Gonyea later ended up with a victory of her own in the 500-yard freestyle finishing with a time of 5:24.73. 

The junior Day just missed out on her third victory of the meet, taking runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly, as she touched the wall in 2:13.78 in a photo finish as Hartwick's Emma Reining beat hear by 0.04 seconds. WPI freshman Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) came in third place with a time of 2:19.99. 

Eggleston won 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.73, following closely by Grant (1:11.82), while de Oliveira led another Engineers one-two finish in her victory in the 100-yard butterfly (102.85), with Martin taking second place in 1:02.99. 

Patterson clocked the second-best time in in 200-yard backstroke, finishing 2:18.04, while Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK) came in third (2:18.98). 

Childers finished second in a pair of close freestyle races against the Hartwick standout Hayes. Childers came in second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.90, just 0.21 seconds behind Hayes, while Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) grabbed third with her time of 57.74. The senior Childers finished runner-up to Hayes in the 200-yard freestyle by 0.53 seconds with a time of 2:02.88, while Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) was the third-place finisher in 2:04.95. 

Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) had the second-best time in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing in 2:20.67, while Hanson came in just after in 2:20.84.

With the victory, WPI evens its dual meet record at 7-7 on the season and closes out the dual meet portion of its schedule Wednesday, entertaining Clark at 6:30pm.
