Eggleston Leads Women’s Swimming & Diving to Inaugural Tech Sprints Crown

WORCESTER – Senior Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT) was a double winner to help lead the WPI women's swimming & diving team to the team title at the inaugural Tech Sprints, which was conducted Sunday inside the Sports & Recreation Center.

The Engineers totaled 3,766 points while Roger Williams posted 2,634 and No. 25 Bates collected 2,104. Keene State rounded out the field with 81 points.

Senior Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT) touched the wall first in the 50-yard breaststroke with a 31.61. Junior Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) was third (33.56) while sophomore Jill Onishi (Groton, MA) and freshman Mackenzie Karnilaw (Houston, TX) secured the top spot in the B and C finals with times of 33.57 and 35.96. respectively. Eggleston also took the 25-yard breaststroke (14.76) and Onishi placed fourth (15.65). In between her victories, Eggleston added a second place time in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.41) to go with Grant's 1:11.90 to win the B race. Senior Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH), meanwhile, tied for first in the 25-yard backstroke as she posted a 13.56.

Junior Jennifer Day (Chelmsford, MA) (11.80) and senior Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) (11.87) were 1-2 in the 25-yard freestyle as four Engineers were in the B final and sophomore Emily Morra (Glenville, NY) paced a C final full of Engineers with a 13.04.

Freshman Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) was the 50-yard butterfly runner up (27.80) and Wang was the fastest in the B final (28.31). Grant was the top swimmer in the B final with a time of 1:11.90. Martin earned silver in the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:03.46 as freshman Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) was fourth (1:04.52). The B and C finals were led by freshman Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK) and Grant with times of 1:04.55 and 1:06.93.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Patterson, Eggleston, Clemente and Martin came in second (1:52.00) while the quartet of freshman Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), Grant, Wang and freshman Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) placed fourth (1:57.50). The foursome of Hanson, sophomore Stephanie Marcucci (Dingmans Ferry, PA), senior Heather Stratica (Wappingers Falls, NY) and Day won the B final in a time of 1:58.09.

WPI boasted three of the four A finalists in the 100-yard freestyle relay. The team of Martin, junior Thea Reymann (Toms River, NJ), Morgan, and Wang were second (46.75) while senior Tori Claverie (Derry, NH), Day, freshman Sofia de Oliveira (Portland, ME), and senior Abbey Nack (Ghent, NY) placed third (47.50), and Matsco, Sophomore Kelly Martin (Penfield, NY), Eggleston and junior Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH) came in fourth (47.81). The lineup of Patterson, Eggleston, Wang and Emily Martin teamed for a runner up 51.40 in the 100-yard medley relay. Hanson, Marcucci, Morgan and de Oliviera led a trio of Engineer entries in the B final with a winning time of 54.09.

Senior Eva Childers (Henniker, NH), Day, Reymann and Emily Martin placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.06) as de Oliviera, Wang, Claverie and Morgan clocked a fourth-place 1:47.08. Nack, senior Julia Bushell (Windham, NH), Grant and Stratica won the B final with a 1:47.81.

Hanson and Childers were second and third in the 200-yard IM with times of 2:18.94 and 2:21.08. Clemente and Wang came in second (1:00.01) and third (1:01.79) in the 100-yard butterfly while junior Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) captured the C final (1:05.32) for the Engineers. Patterson (28.70) and Seo (24.45) touched the wall second and fourth in the 50-yard backstroke.

The 25-yard butterfly saw Clemente place fourth (12.85) and Day land fifth (12.90). de Oliviera used a 13.33 to claim the B race. Claverie collected a fourth-place time of 26.57 in the 50-yard freestyle to go with Stratica's 27.03 that won the C final.

Childers led the 100-yard freestyle B final (57.82) while freshman Anna Matsco (Windham, NH) was fourth (58.95) and Emily Matsco took the C final (58.41).

Junior Kristen Bender (Simi Valley, CA) was the runner up in the 3-meter dive (448.90). Junior Hayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) was third (334.60), Freshman Alexis Mittelman (Montgomery, NY) was fourth (272.60) and freshman Leigh Whitehorn (Madison, NJ) was sixth (253.45). Bender was also second in the 1-meter event with a 439.40. Poskus and Mittleman followed in third (385.80) and fourth (313.05).

The afternoon distance session saw Hanson place second in the 400-yard IM (4:56.95) and freshman Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) take fourth.

Junior Kaye Dandrea (Lakeville, MA) saw action in the 25-yard freestyle and breaststroke, as well as the 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Caroline Flynn (Norwell, MA) hit the water in the 50-yard breaststroke, 100-yard IM and 100-yard breaststroke as classmate Elsa Luthi (Seattle, WA) contested the 25-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard backstroke. Sophomore Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY) swam in the 25-yard freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke events.

The Engineers are at Clark Saturday for the 2pm Cougar Invitational.
