Women’s Swimming & Diving’s Patterson Breaks Pair of Records on Penultimate Day of NEWMACs

WORCESTER – Senior Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH) broke a pair of records and had the highest placing swim Saturday night as part of the four-day NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships being held in the Sports & Recreation Center through Sunday.

MIT is 15 points shy of an even thousand with 985. WPI moved back into second with 518.5 points. Wheaton (496), Springfield (487) and Wellesley (348) are third through fifth. The second group is led by Coast Guard (341). The Bears are followed by Smith (240.5), Clark (232), Mount Holyoke (163) and Babson (116).

The first record to fall was actually a reset of the 100-yard backstroke record that was broken by Patterson last night in the first leg of the 400-yard medley relay. This time, Patterson clocked a 58.34 to finish third in the individual event. At the end of the night, Patterson took over the 50-yard backstroke record with a 27.25 split as part of the fourth-place 200-yard medley relay. She teamed with senior Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT), freshman Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) and senior Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) to hand in a 1:48.16.

Eggleston headlined the 100-yard breaststroke with a sixth-place 1:07.41 as junior Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) finished 10th (1:09.11). Martin and senior Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) were 7-8 in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:56.09 and 1:56.72 while freshman Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK) was eighth (4:46.74) and junior Kaitlin Travers (Northampton, MA) was 10th (4:48.59) in the 400-yard IM.

Five Engineers competed in the 100-yard butterfly consolation. Patterson won with a 59.81 as Wang was .01 seconds behind in 12th. Freshman Sofia de Oliveira (Portland, ME) came home 14th (1:00.30) followed by classmates Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) in18th (1:01.00) and Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) in 20th (1:01.22). The second 200-yard medley foursome of Seo, Grant, junior Jennifer Day (Chelmsford, MA) and freshman Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) was third in its final with a time of 1:51.21.

Freshman Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) led the Engineers in the 400-yard IM B final with a time of 4:49.57. Junior Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH) was 14th (4:50.35), sophomore Kelly Martin (Penfield, NY) was 17th (4:53.51) and senior Julia Bushell (Windham, NH) was 20th (4:55.55). Junior Emily Matsco (Windham, NH), freshman Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) and senior Tori Claverie (Derry, NH) finished 14th (1:58.71), 16th (1:59.19) and 20th (2:02.94) as Edwardson was 15th (1:10.70) and sophomore Stephanie Marcucci (Dingmans Ferry, PA) was 16th (1:10.90) in the 100-yard breaststroke. Seo and Morgan placed 15th (1:00.35) and 18th (1:01.31) in the 100-yard backstroke.

The final day of competition will include the 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 400-yard freestyle relay and 3-meter dive. Trials begin at 10am and finals at 6pm.
