Day Guides Women’s Swimming & Diving to Third Place at City Championships

WORCESTER – Led by senior Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA), WPI women's swimming & diving placed third Saturday at the season-opening Worcester City Championships, hosted by Clark.

Division II Assumption claimed its sixth consecutive Callie Taffe Trophy with 883.5 points. Division I Holy Cross was second with 856 and the Engineers totaled 737.5. NEWMAC foe Clark amassed 324. Ms. Taffe was an outstanding competitor and school record holder for Holy Cross who earned AIAW All-America honors in 1981.

The Crusaders swept the individual awards as sophomore Kayleigh Hoagland (Colts Neck, NJ) was the Cathy Desrosiers (Clark '82) Female Swimmer of the Meet and junior Casey Sherman (Littleton, MA) earned the Beth Ferraro (Clark '82) Female Diver of the Meet.

Day won her first 500-yard freestyle of the year with a time of 5:14.47. She also the runner up in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.07) and third in the 200-yard IM (2:17.16), as well as the third-place 400-yard freestyle and medley relay teams, the fourth-place 200-yard freestyle relay and fifth-place 200-yard medley relay. Freshman Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA), sophomore Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) and sophomore Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) were part of the 400 free relay that clocked a 3:46.49 as sophomore Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), sophomore Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC), Berner and Day collaborated for a time of 4:12.11 in the 400 medley relay. Berner and Morgan bookended the 200 free relay (1:43.89) which also contained sophomores Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) and Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME). Seo, Edwardson, Day and Morgan delivered a 1:57.31 in the 200 medley relay.

Individually, Berner was fifth in the 50-yard butterfly (27.65) and 50-yard freestyle (25.98) and Clemente was 10th in the 100-yard freestyle (56.87). Seo added a third-place time of 1:03.00 in the 100-yard backstroke and was fifth in the 50 (30.01) while Wang touched the wall sixth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.07).

Senior Hayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) was second on both diving boards with a 216.20 on the 1-meter and a 237.00 on the 3-meter. Sophomore Alexis Mittelman (Montgomery, NY) and Leigh Whitehorn (Madison, NJ) also turned in scores above 200 with a 208.95 and 208.05 to take third and fourth on the higher board.

Senior Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) posted a fifth-place time of 33.38 in the 50-yard breaststroke as freshman Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) was sixth in the 100-yard version (1:12.25).

The Engineers make their home debuts Friday with Babson, Brandeis and Smith at 7pm before taking on RPI and Simmons on Saturday at 1pm.
