400 Medley Relay Fuels Impressive Sweep by Women’s Swimming and Diving

WORCESTER – The 400-yard medley relay set the tone as the WPI women's swimming & diving team had the best performance in every swimming event in a sweep of Babson, Smith and Brandeis Friday night in the Sports & Recreation Center. The Engineers (3-0) topped the Pioneers (2-1), 168-121, Judges (1-5), 176-94, and Beavers (0-4), 180-60. Brandeis won its matchups versus Smith (176-118) and Babson (177-67) as the Pioneers bested Babson 188-96.

The foursome of sophomore Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), sophomore Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC), freshman Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) and senior Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) won the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:11.28. Individually, Seo took the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes with times of 1:02.72 and 2:15.35, and Edwardson swept the 100- and 200- yard breaststrokes in 1:11.86 and 2:36.25. Berner, who was also on the fastest 200-yard freestyle relay, earned gold in the 50-yard freestyle (25.69) and later had the best time of 1:01.86 in the 100-yard butterfly. Day, meanwhile, secured the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.44) and touched the wall first in the 400-yard IM (4:50.20).

Sophomores Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT), Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) and Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) joined Berner to post a 1:44.20 in the 200 free relay. Earlier in the meet, Clemente won the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.07). The distance freestyle was all sophomore Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) with a 5:27.32 in the 500 and 11:04.61 in the 1,000. Senior Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH) needed only 56.08 to earn the 100 free victory.

Smith won both diving events with senior Elly Stone (Westboro, MA) leading sophomores Abigail Hanna (Averill Park, NY) and Shoshana Werblow (Ashland, OR) on the 1-meter with scores of 256.90, 250.65 and 224.75. Senior Hayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) followed with 201.60. Hanna was the better Pioneer on the 3-meter with a total of 282.70.

WPI (3-0) hosts RPI and Simmons tomorrow at 1pm while Smith is back in action Tuesday with a trip down I-91 for a 7pm start at Springfield and Babson is off until next Saturday when it heads to Regis for a 1pm double dual that incudes Norwich. Brandeis is at Bentley Friday night for a 6pm dual.
