Melanson, Gallant and Bauer Win Twice as Men’s Swimming & Diving Sweeps Home Opener

WORCESTER – Senior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA), and juniors Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) and Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) all won a pair of individual events as the WPI men's swimming and diving team defeated Babson, 184-102, and Brandeis, 168-121, Friday night in the Sports & Recreation Center. The Judges, meanwhile, earned a 157-122 triumph over the Beavers in their head-to-head matchup.

Melanson totaled 265.15 on the 1-meter diving board and 227.20 on the 3-meter as Gallant struck gold in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.15) and later had the quickest swim in the 400-yard IM (4:19.75). Bauer posted a 53.23 in the 100-yard backstroke and a 48.22 in the 100-yard freestyle.

The 400-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays bookended the evening with the fastest times. Bauer teamed with sophomore Dave Chen (Niantic, CT), junior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and graduate student Erick Burgwardt (Honeoye Falls, NY) to begin the dual meet with a 3:31.25 in the 400 MR while senior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) led off the 200 FR (1:27.39) that included Perry, Burgwardt and Bauer.

Chen picked up an individual victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.20) to go with Burgwardt's winning-time of 21.88 in the 50-yard freestyle. Freshman Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) chipped in with a first-place performance in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.91).

Elsayed was .21 seconds behind Babson sophomore Alex Damiecki (Centerville, MA) with a runner up time of 52.36. Senior Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) was second to Brandeis freshman Daniel Wohl (Chapel Hill, NC) with a time of 1:49.20 in the 200-yard freestyle and sophomore Jehu De la Rosa (The Woodlands, TX) wasn't far behind Brandeis sophomore Tamir Zitelny (Syosset, NY) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.06). Richie Selznick and Beaver sophomore Jack Lucero (Huntington Beach, CA) were 1-2 in the distance freestyles as junior Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) was third in the 1,000 (10:32.87) and sophomore Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) earned bronze in the 500 (5:01.85).

WPI (2-0) welcomes RPI tomorrow at 1pm as Babson is at Regis, with Norwich, next Saturday and Brandeis is at Bentley Friday night.
