Men’s Swimming & Diving Defeats Wesleyan, Edged by No. 12 Williams

Middletown, CT --- Sophomore Dave Chen (Niantic, CT) was a double winner and three others tasted victory as the 23rd-ranked WPI men's swimming & diving team defeated host Wesleyan 239-80, was edged 158.5-156.5 by No. 12 Williams and fell to No. 11 Tufts 187-134 Saturday.

The Jumbos improved to 5-0 as the Ephs move to 4-2. WPI is now 6-4 and Wesleyan ends the day 0-6.

Chen delivered the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.56 before securing the 200 in a time of 2:10.00. He was also second in the 50 (26.98). Junior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) was picked up the first Engineer win of the day in the 50-yard butterfly (23.26) and added a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (51.99). Classmate Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) claimed the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.56) and was the runner up in the 50 (23.84) and 100 (51.62).

Senior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) was the top diver with a 278.00 on the 1-meter board and was third on the 3-meter (255.35). Sophomore Chris Nelson (Millbury, MA) was fifth on the 1-meter (208.50) and senior Ryan Coran (Potomac, MD) totaled a fourth-place 204.40 from the 3-meter.

Bauer and Perry were joined by freshman Tim McDonald (Walpole, MA) and senior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) in the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay (3:10.47), a mere .03 behind Williams. Elsayed was second (47.58) in the 100-yard freestyle and third (22.08) in the 50. McDonald took sixth in the 200 version of the event with a time of 1:47.12.

Freshman Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) ended up fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.76) and fifth in the 400-yard IM. Sophomore Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) secured fourth in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Engineers are idle until January 17 when the teams head to Wheaton for a 6:30pm meet that includes UMass Dartmouth. Tufts is at BC on January 16. Williams and Wesleyan return to action January 6 with trips to Amherst and Hamilton, respectively.
