Day Resets 500 Free Record as Women’s Swimming & Diving Sits Fifth at NEWMACs

Cambridge, MA --- Senior Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) reset a school record as WPI placed fifth on the first full day of the 2018 NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships at MIT.

The host Engineers lead with 427 points followed by Wheaton (254), Springfield (270.5), and Coast Guard (214.5), as well as the Crimson and Gray (198). All 11 team scores below.

Day once again bettered the 500-yard freestyle record at the conference championship, this time with a third-place 5:01.62. Sophomore Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) was 13th, sophomore Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) was 14th and senior Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) was 18th in the distance race.

The 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley A relays each finished fifth. Sophomore Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME), Day, freshman Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) and sophomore Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) clocked a 1:38 flat in the 200 final while sophomore Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), senior Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA), Berner and de Oliveira posted a 3:58.20 in the 400 final. Berner, Seo, de Oliveira and Morgan took the first shift in the 200 as Seo, Grant, Berner and Morgan swam the 400 in the morning session.

The 200 free B final saw sophomore Anna Matsco (Windham, NH), sophomore Carol Wang (Framingham, MA), freshman Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME) and senior Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH) finish fourth. The morning configuration consisted of Anna Matsco, Wang, Silsby and Freud. Sophomore Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK), classmate Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC), Clemente and Morgan were third in the 400 B final while de Oliveira was the anchor in the early swim.

Hanson was eighth in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:12.54. The consolation final saw junior Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY) take 13th overall while wang and freshman Mary Rego (Amherst, NH) occupied the alternate spots. de Oliveira came home 10th in the 50-yard freestyle championship heat with a time of 24.99. Berner won the B final and Morgan was 20th.

The 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard medley relay prelims and finals are set for Saturday at 10am and 6pm, respectively.
