Burgwardt's B Cuts Headline Men’s Swim Dive’s Team Effort on First Full Day of NEWMACs

Cambridge, MA --- Graduate student Erick Burgwardt (Honeoye Falls, NY) and sophomore Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) each set a school record while Burgwardt and both A relays garnered All-Conference second team status on the first full day of competition at the 2018 NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships at MIT.

As a team, the Engineers are third with 342 points. MIT leads with 570 and Coast Guard is second with 426.5.

Burgwardt claimed the 50-yard freestyle record as he tied for second place with a B cut time of 20.54. Junior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) followed in seventh (21.02) and senior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) was 12th overall. Zimmermann joined elite company with his fifth-place 500-yard freestyle as he replaced Jeffrey Meyer, who owns many of the older records on the wall, with a WPI-best 4:39.18. Senior Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) and junior Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) were 15th and 17th, respectively.

The 200-yard freestyle relay runner up team included Burgwardt, Bauer, junior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and Elsayed with a B cut and 2017 NCAA invite time of 1:22.33. Burgwardt and Elsayed sandwiched Perry and freshman Tim McDonald (Walpole, MA) in the morning swim. Both B configurations placed third in their races as freshman Tucker Besch (West Sand Lake, NY), sophomore Dave Chen (Niantic, CT), sophomore Matthew Scherrer (Wellesley, MA) and senior Chris Massar (Monroe, CT) manned the eye-opener and Scherrer, McDonald, Massar and Barrett worked the night shift.

Bauer, Chen, Perry and Elsayed finished second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:19.70, a B cut and a 2017 NCAA invited time. The morning crew featured sophomore Jehu De la Rosa (The Woodlands, TX), Chen, Perry and Elsayed. De la Rosa, Gallant, Besch and Burgwardt were third in the evening, as was the lineup of freshman Aaron McCutcheon (Smithfield, RI), freshman Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH), Besch and sophomore Joshua Driscoll (Haverhill, MA) in the early session.

Junior Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) shared the fifth-place spot on the podium with a time of 1:54.09 in the 200-yard IM. The B final saw Denbow (12th), Chen (13th), freshman Emmett McCann (Seattle, WA) (15th), freshman Eric Scholz (Fulton, MD) (17th), McCutcheon (18th) and sophomore Michael McCarthy (Long Beach, NY) (19th), accumulate 32 points for the Engineers.

The 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard medley relay prelims and finals are set for Saturday at 10am and 6pm, respectively.  The men's 3-meter dive prelims get underway at 1:15 and finals are before the 200 medley relay.
