Cambridge, MA --- Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) broke the 100-yard breaststroke record while the WPI women's swimming & diving team is fourth heading into the final day of the NEWMAC Championships at MIT.
The hosts total 866 points while Wheaton is second (687.5), Springfield is third (507.5) and WPI has amassed 474 points.
Grant touched the wall fifth in the A final with a time of 1:06.15. She was joined in the heat by Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) in eighth (1:07.87) and Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME) in 10th (1:08.20). The consolation featured Caroline Flynn (Norwell, MA) in 17th, Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) in 18th and Mary Rego (Amherst, NH) in 20th.
The 200-yard medley relay saw Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), Grant, Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) and Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) take third (1:48.57) in the A final and Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK), Edwardson, Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) and Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME) finish third in the B final. Edwardson was in the A and Grant was in the B for the prelims.
Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) was sixth (58.88) in the 100-yard butterfly and Berner was ninth (59.34). Morgan (12th), Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) (15th), de Oliveria (18th) and Seo (20th) represented the Engineers in the consolation final.
Hanson clocked an eighth-place 4:43.10 in the 400-yard IM championship final. Edwardson, Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH), Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY) and Kaitlin Travers (Northampton, MA) were 12th, 13th, 15th and 20th, respectively.
Seo posted a 1:01.27 to take 12th in the 100-yard backstroke as Morgan came home 14th and Wang finished 20th. Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) was 16th in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:59.09 and Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) was three spots behind in 19th.
The final day includes the 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay. Sessions are once again slated to start at 10am and 6pm. The 1-meter dive is scheduled for 1:15pm and prior to the 400 free relay.
