Women’s Swimming & Diving Finishes Fourth at NEWMAC Championships

Cambridge, MA --- Senior Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) set a school record in the first event of the night as the WPI women placed fourth at the four-day 2018 NEWMAC Swimming & Diving Championships.

MIT once again claimed the team crown, this time with 1,314 points. Wheaton was second (1,002), Springfield was third (795.5) and the Crimson and Gray accumulated 721.

Day also achieved a B cut and collected All-NEWMAC second team honors for her runner up time of 17:21.02 in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Sophomore Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) took sixth (17:55.95) while, earlier in the day, senior Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH) posted the 15th-place time and freshman Daire Daly (Sharon, MA) secured 19th place for the Crimson and Gray.

Later in the meet Day took fourth in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:10.17, just ahead of sophomore Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) in fifth (2:10.78). Sophomore Anna Matsco (Windham, NH) and senior Kaitlin Travers (Northampton, MA) were sixth and seventh in the B final. Freshman Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA), sophomore Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME), Clemente and Day posted a fifth-place time (3:34.17) in the 400-yard freestyle relay A final. The B relay was staffed by sophomore Carol Wang (Framingham, MA), senior Emily Matsco (Windham, NH), Freud and sophomore Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY).

Sophomore Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) touched the wall eighth (2:29.81) in the 200-yard breaststroke while senior Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) was the fastest in the consolation heat. Freshman Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME) was 12th, Flynn was 16th and classmate Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) was 17th. The 100-yard freestyle saw Berner take ninth (53.32), de Oliveira finish 13th, Freud secure 15th and Emily Matsco place 17th. Junior Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY) ended up 13th in the 200-yard backstroke as sophomore Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) was 16th and sophomore Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK) was 18th.

Diving regionals are set for March 2nd and 3rd at Middlebury. The initial NCAA Division III Championship swim selections are expected be announced on Wednesday by 5pm.
