SUMMER REWIND: Bauer Rewrites NEWMAC Record Book at Swim Dive Championships

Cambridge, MA --- Junior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) repeated as the 100-yard backstroke champion, and he did it in style, as the WPI men's swimming & diving team ended day three of the NEWMACChampionships at MIT in third place.

MIT continues to lead and totals 1,109 points. Coast Guard is second with 824.5 and the Boynton Hillers follow with 656.

Bauer broke his own school and meet record that he set last year while also taking down the NEWMAC open record with a time of 48.22, the third quickest of the season in Division III. Jackson Perry(Cumberland, RI) was 10th (52.70) while Jehu De la Rosa (The Woodlands, TX) was 13th, Joshua Driscoll (Haverhill, MA) was 16th and Aaron McCutcheon (Smithfield, RI) was 17th.

The 200-yard medley relay team consisting of Bauer, Dave Chen (Niantic, CT), Perry and Erick Burgwardt (Honeoye Falls, NY) achieved a B cut with a second-place and All-NEWMAC second team time of 1:30.25. The morning swim was staffed by Perry, Chen, Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) and Burgwardt. The quartet of De la Rosa, Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH), Elsayed and Craig Barrett(Edinburgh, Scotland) made up the evening B relay while Tucker Besch (West Sand Lake, NY) was in Elsayed's spot earlier in the day.

Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) took third in the 3-meter dive with a score of 433.55 while Burgwardt bettered his 50-yard freestyle record set just last night with a time of 20.49 in a time trial. Elsayed was fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (49.84) while Perry was seventh (50.12), Burgwardt was 12th and Besch was 16th.

Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) led the way in the 400-yard IM with a seventh-place 4:05.42 as Driscoll won the B final in 4:11.00. Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) was 12th, followed by Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) in 15th, Trevor Gehring (Wildwood Crest, NJ) in 16th and Michael McCarthy (Long Beach, NY) in 17th. Barrett added a seventh-place 1:43.03 in the 200-yard freestyle to go along with Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) in 14th, Tim McDonald (Walpole, MA) in 15th and Matthew Scherrer(Wellesley, MA) in 18th. Chen was also seventh as he handed in a 57.38 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Denbow claimed 12th, Emmett McCann (Seattle, WA) took 15th and Eric Scholz (Fulton, MD) was 19th for the Crimson and Gray.
