Sykes Stands Out In Women’s Swimming and Diving Home Double-Dual

WORCESTER -- The WPI women's swimming and diving team was swept for the first this season in Saturday's home meet against MIT and Bowdoin, but sophomore Molly Sykes (Falmouth, MA) stood apart with several strong events. 

Sykes managed the Engineers' only top 3 finish of the meet, coming in third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:27.90. She was also WPI's top swimmer in the 200 freestyle (4th, 2:01.10) and led off the fifth-place 400-yard freestyle relay team, which also included Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA), Lexi Clark (Easton, MD) and Kimberly Hazeltine (Stratham, NH), finishing in 3:45.60.  

Meet winner MIT topped WPI by 239-61 score, while Bowdoin beat the Worcester Engineers, 220-78. MIT put the Polar Bears on ice, 185-113. 

WPI had three other fourth-place finishes on Saturday, including Pawlak in the 50 freestyle (25.13). Clark also cracked the top 10, nabbing eighth in 25.90 seconds. Similarly, Pawlak came in eighth in the 100-yard freestyle in 55.68 seconds. 

After Sykes, Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) was WPI's only swimmer with two top five finishes in individual events. Gonyea took fourth place in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:09.48) and came in after Sykes in the 500 freestyle (5th, 5:31.57). 

Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) finished back-to-back with Sykes in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall 1/4 after Sykes to grab fifth place (2:01.35). 

Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly, breaking a minute with her time of 59.96 seconds. Meanwhile, Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL) was WPI's best swimmer in the 200-yard butterfly (6th, 2:18.99). 

The Engineers' final top five finisher was Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) in the 200-yard breaststroke (5th, 2:33.22), while Mackenzie Karnilaw (Houston, TX) led a contingent of three straight WPI swimmer rounding out the top 10, clocking in at 2:36.51 to place eighth. 

In the 200-yard backstroke, WPI had five straight finishers fill out the 6-10 spots in the top 10, led by Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) sixth place (2:19.84). Seo also paced the Engineers in the 100 backstroke, coming in ninth (1:03.80). 

Edwardson started a run of five consecutive swimmers for the home side when she touched the wall seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.91 

She was also a member of WPI's seventh-place 200-yard medley relay team, which also included Seo, Wang and Pawlak and had a time of 1:54.99. 

Sarah MacDonald (Yorktown Heights, NY) was the Engineers' only top 10 finisher in the 200-yard individual medley, coming in ninth (2:22.07). 

Julia Noel (Beverly, MA) finished fifth in the 3-meter dive with a score of 191.80 and sixth in the 1-meter diver (190.80). 

Women's swimming and diving will be back in action two weekends from now, hosting the Gompei Invitational on December 6-8.
