Shriner, Staubi and Zimmerman Propel WPI Men's Swim/Dive to Third at Gompei Invitational

WORCESTER -- Matthew Shriner (Arlington, MA) turned in a third place performance and Kyle Staubi (Red Hook, NY) and Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) added four place showings as host WPI men's swimming and diving completed action on the third and final day of the seventh annual Gompei Invitational.  

Team scoring in the meet is a combination of points earned by each men's and women's programs.  The Engineers combined to amassed 4,069 points to edge Division II Bentley (4,028.50 points) for third place.  Division I Bryant took home the team crown with 6,640 points while Rowan (4,765) placed second and Roger Williams (2,890.50) rounded out the top five in the 13-team meet. 

Shriner posted a time of 1:52.83 in the 200-yard butterfly.  Staubi finished 10th in the event with a time of 2:03.77 while Christopher Thomas (Naperville, IL/) was 18th overall (2:01.34) and Peter Guertin (Sutton, MA) and Henry Buda (Laurel, MD) went 1-2 in the C finals. 

Staubi was fourth in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:53.59 and Peter Fagerholm (Newtown, CT) was 10th in 1:58.25 and Joshua Driscoll (Haverhill, MA) 17th in 1:59.65.  Zimmermann (4:43.08) nabbed his fourth place in the 500 freestyle while Buda (12th - 4:48.20) and Matthew Olson (Honolulu, HI) (16th - 4:51.38) competed in the B finals.  

Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH) was seventh in the 50-yard breaststroke, reaching the wall in 27.13 and Eric Scholz (28.24).  Again, the Crimson and Gray earned valuable points atop the C final as Harry Saperstein (Simsbury, CT) and BK Jeong (Marshfield, MA) went 1-2. 

Fagerholm recorded WPI's top finish in the 100-yard IM (13th - 55.42) while Emmett McCann (Seattle, WA) touched the wall first in the C finals.   Zimmermann was the Boynton Hillers top finisher in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 19th place in a time of 48.13. 

In relays, the Engineers top foursome of John Puksta (Nashua, NH), Zimmermann, Cory Helmuth (South Bend, IN) and Fagerholm was ninth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:11.03) while the B unit of Clayton Besch (West Sand Lake, NY), Eric Scholz (Fulton, MD), Shriner and Staubi was 11th (3:11.91). 

WPI is off until mid-January.  They will travel to the Mid-Atlantic region and compete at Rowan on Saturday, January 18th along with Johns Hopkins and Swarthmore and at Stevens on Sunday, January 19th.
