Men's Track and Field Posts Fourth Place Finish at NEWMAC Championships

New London, CT --- Freshman  Wesley DeChristofaro (Woonsocket, RI) captured an individual title as Men's Track and Field placed fourth out of six teams in the 2011 NEWMAC Championships at Coast Guard on Saturday. MIT took the team competition for the 11th straight year as they amassed 266 points as Springfield and Coast Guard earned second (223) and third (127). WPI finished with 92 points on the day.

DeChristofaro won the high jump as he cleared 6-4 en route to a first team All-Conference nod as Nick Everett (Natick, MA) claimed fourth (5-11.25) and Matija Zelic (Westboro, MA) came home seventh (5-9.25).

The freshman also garnered second team All-Conference in the triple jump with a distance of 44-7. Also grabbing top eight finishes in the event were Edmund Eduah (Accra, Ghana) and Tim Forrest (Madison, CT) as they recorded a 42-8.75 for fifth and a 42-7 for sixth.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Forrest raced to a 15.35 and Jeff Baker (Wallingford, CT) tossed the javelin 194-1 to find their way on to the second team All-Conference squad. Joining Forrest in the hurdles were DeChristofaro in fifth (16.10) and Kyle Diaz (Sturbridge, MA) in eighth (16.92). Mike Thyden (Sutton, MA) turned in a 156-1 for sixth in the javelin.

Stephen Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) clocked a 51.37 for third in the 400-meter dash and Kyle Morette (Leominster, MA) soared 14-9 for fourth in the pole vault.

The 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams each placed crossed the finish line fifth as Thyden, Cory Adams (Northboro, MA), Eduah and Ditton Kawalya (Kanbala, Uganda) registered a 45.47 and the quartet of Josh Matte (Litchfield, NH), Morette, Scott Woodnorth (Milwaukee, WI) and Kocienski posted a 3:28.27 in the meet finale.

In the hammer throw Chris Farren (Plaistow, NH) and Gary Feldman (Ellington, CT) grabbed fifth (154-9) and sixth (154-4) for the Engineers.

Josh Brodin (Mansfield, MA), Todd Alexander (Foxboro, MA) and Robert Hollinger (Averill Park, NY) gained valuable points with sixth (34:37.88), seventh (34:43.91) and eighth place (34:44.59) finishes in the 10,000-meter run.

Also representing the Engineers in the top eight were Zelic in the long jump (seventh - 20-6.50), Morette in the 200-meter dash (seventh - 22.67), Jeremy Francisco (Dartmouth, MA) in the 5,000-meter run (seventh - 16:08.32), Eduah in the 100-meter dash (eighth - 11.87) and Feldman in the discus (eighth – 115-9).

Other top Crimson and gray performances were Matte in the 400-meter hurdles (59.51), Lane Thornton (Richmond, VT) in the 1500-meter run (4:08.35), Greg McConnell (Georgia, VT) in the 800-meter run (2:04.23), Shane Ruddy (Seneca Falls, NY) in the steeplechase (10:12.24) and Feldman in the shot put (37-2.50).

Next week Men's Track and Field will send select athletes to the New England Division III Championships on Friday and Saturday at MIT.
