Pumphrey Wins ECACs as Women's Track and Field Set to Send Four to NCAAs

Springfield, MA --- Sophomore Laura Pumphrey (East Hampton, CT) won the high jump for the third straight weekend at a regional championship event and Noelle Richard (Oxford, MA) placed second in the 400 meters as the WPI Track and Field teams participated Thursday and Friday in the ECAC Championships at Springfield.  The Crimson and Gray, paced by Pumphrey, Richard and Julie Eagle (Rock, Island, IL), totaled 22.50 points to finish 12th out of 56 scoring teams. 

Pumphrey cleared 5-6.50 to add the ECAC title to her New England Division III and All-New England All-Divisions championships that she brought home the last two weeks. Eagle, who tied for fourth with a height of 5-4.50, won the NEWMACs three weeks ago, ensuring the Engineers a win at all four of the outdoor championships to date. 

Richard posted a time of 56.65 en route to finishing second in the 400 meters.  The senior will be making her sixth career NCAA appearance next weekend, and will be joined at the event by the high-jumping duo of Pumphrey and Eagle and Adrianna Davis (Chelmsford, MA) who was 27th (15.45) in the 100 meter hurdles.  Sophomore Andrea Caprio (Tewksbury, MA) entered Friday in the 22nd and final spot in the javelin but is unable to compete at the nationals. 

Senior Kimi Joback (Bedford, NH) concluded her standout career by placing 16th in the javelin (113-3) and 21st (140-3) in the hammer throw.  Freshman Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) heaved the javelin 111-3 to take 19th. 

In the running events, Kelsie Lazaro (Somerset, MA) crossed the finish line in the 400 meter hurdles in 15th in a time of 1:05.51 while Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) lowered her school record in the 1500 meters (25th place - 4:45.63) and Maya Rhinehart (Springfield, MA) placed 35th (12.77) in the 100 meters. 

The 4x100 quartet of Rhinehart, Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA), Alex Price (Franklin, MA) and Davis finished 16th in a time of 50.07 and the 4x400 foursome of Pellegrini, Rhinehart, Lazaro and Richard clocked a time of 4:04.66 to place 17th. 

The NCAA Division III Championships begin Thursday at Wisconsin- LaCrosse with all four WPI qualifiers scheduled to compete on Friday.
