Pumphrey Resets School Record as Women's Track and Field Strikes Gold at Springfield

Springfield, MA --- Laura Pumphrey (East Hampton, CT) won a pair of events and claimed the indoor program record in the high jump as the WPI women's track and field team captured the Springfield College Invitational on Saturday. The Engineers amassed 188 points as Springfield posted 170, Rhode Island College earned 95 and Westfield State tallied 81.

Pumphrey cleared 5-7.75 to claim the high jump record outright. She previously shared the record height of 5-7 with Julie Eagle (Gr '14). Pumphrey also clocked a 9.3 for the winning time in the 60-meter hurdles. Both marks gain entry into all three regional meets (DIII NE, All-NE and ECAC DIII). Justine Sherman (Boulder, CO) also earned a spot in the DIII NE meet with a fifth-place 9.86 in the 60-meter hurdles. Her 9.74 was fourth in the preliminary heats. Sherman was second (4-10.25) and Abigail McAdams (Oakdale, CT) finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 4-6.75.

Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY) crossed the finish line first (2:29.14) in the 800-meter run and was followed by Maria Grandoni (Framingham, MA) in fourth (2:32.19). Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) broke the tape in the mile for an ECAC qualifying time of 5:17.91. Tevenan teamed with Capobianco, Maggie LaRoche (Madison, NH) and Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) to win the 4x800-meter relay while the quartet of Grandoni, Caitlin Walde (Edmonds,WA), Julia Smith (Cranston, RI) and Emma MacIntyre (Grand Island, NY) posted an 11:03.27 to best both squads from Springfield.

Walde led the way in the 5,000-meter run with a 19:51.42. Hansen was second (19:55.91, Jasmine Higuera (Riverside, CA) was third (20:11.14) and Gabriela Meza (Wilmington, CA) was sixth (21:55.19). Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) delivered in the 600-meter run with a DIII NE qualifying time of 1:41.60 as Kelsie Lazaro (Somerset, MA) placed fourth (1:45.51).

Katie McManus (North Andover, MA) was second in the shot put (34-5) while Taylor Flaxington (Lincoln, RI), a DIII NE qualifier, led a trio of Engineers with a second place showing in the pole vault (10). Sarah Muse (Rye, NH) cleared 9-6.25 and Heather Selmer (Weathersfield, VT) followed with a  height of 8-6.25 for third and fourth place. Lauren Richard's (Plymouth, MA) third-place distance of 34-3 in the triple jump earned her a spot in the DIII New England meet.

Sara Velleca (Waterbury, CT) and Maya Rhinehart (Springfield, MA) went three-four in the 60-meter dash with an 8.12 and 8.22, respectively. Richard and Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA) did the same in the 200-meter dash with times of 28.11 and 28.32. The 4x400-meter relay team of Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY), Strangio, Lazaro and Rhinehart was third as the foursome of Velleca, Elizabeth Walfield (Bath, ME), Marguerite Carey (Middleboro, MA) and Haley Dyer (Danvers, MA) bested their fellow B teams with a fourth-place 4:30.06.

In the 4x200-meter relay, Rhinehart, Velleca, Teed and Pumphrey placed third (1:51.63) and the team of Kocienski, Sherman, Walfield and Carey were quicker than Westfield State's A squad with a time of 1:56. The 1,000-meter run saw LaRoche, Dyer and MacIntyre finish third (3:16.82), fifth (3:27.53) and sixth (3:31.23). Richard added a fourth place effort in the long jump (15-4) and Kate Piotrowicz (Berlin, CT) was fourth in the weight throw (42-5.25).

WPI returns to action on Saturday, January 17 when the team heads to Brunswick, ME for the Bowdoin Invitational.
