Pumphrey a Double Winner as Women's Track and Field Competes at Tufts Stampede

Medford, MA --- Laura Pumphrey (East Hampton, CT) remained unbeaten in the high jump and won the 60-meter hurdles while as the WPI women's track and field team competed at the 2015 Tufts Stampede on Saturday.

Pumphrey, the current Division III leader in the high jump, improved to 3-0 on the season with a 5-5.75 and also posted a 9.46 to win the 60-meter hurdles after logging a 9.35 in the prelims. Justine Sherman (Boulder, CO) improved on her initial time of 9.90 to place second with a 9.66.

Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) chipped in with victory in the 1,000-meter run (3:03.47) as Maggie LaRoche (Madison, NH) and Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY) were fourth (3:13.14) and fifth (3:13.84), respectively.

A pair of relay teams also emerged with a triumph. Alex Price (Franklin, MA), Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA), Elizabeth Walfield (Bath, ME) and Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) combined for a 1:50.47 in the 4x200-meter relay while Kocienski, Maya Rhinehart (Springfield, MA), Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA) and Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) took the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 4:05.80. 

The Engineers all but dominated the 200-meter dash as the team took second and fourth through ninth place. Pellegrini led the contingent with a time of 26.61. Anne Harris (Hamburg, NY) was fourth (27.35) and Rhinehart rounded out the top five with a 27.60. Price, Lauren Richard (Plymouth, MA), Walfield and Teed followed in sixth (27.68), seventh (27.81), eighth (28.09) and ninth (28.12).

Harris, Rhinehart and Price qualified for the 60-meter dash finals and placed fifth (8.12), seventh (8.25) and eighth (8.28) for the Engineers. Strangio was a fraction of a second out of sixth place in the 800-meter run with a 2:27.57 and Sarah Muse (Rye, NH) was eight overall and sixth among collegiate competitors in the pole vault with a height of 10 feet.

WPI hits the road for the Boston University Scarlet and White Invitational on February 7.
