Men’s DMR Strikes Gold as Both Track and Field Teams Post Top 10 Efforts at ECACs

New York, NY --- The men's distance medley relay team struck gold in a school-record time to highlight WPI's performances at the ECAC Division III Championships, hosted at The Armory on Friday and Saturday. The women's 4x200-meter relay squad also set a program record as a total of five individuals and six relays garnered All-ECAC status. As a team. the men (34 points) shared sixth place with Ithaca while the women (21 points) shared 10th place with Brockport State.

Andrew Zayac (Plymouth, MA), Joey Collins (Standish, ME), Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) and Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) combined to clock a 10:05.12 to reset the school record and win the distance medley relay with splits of 3:03.9, 49.6, 1:54.9 and 4:15.8, respectively. The 4x200-meter relay team of Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT), Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA), Alex Price (Franklin, MA) and Anne Harris (Hamburg, NY) turned in a fourth-place, and school-record, time of 1:44.12. Pellegrini finished 15th in the 60-meter hurdles (9.39) to round out Friday's action.

Ryan Dennis (Milford, CT), Warren Staver (Centreville, MD), Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH) and Collins earned silver with a second-place 3:21.39 in the 4x400-meter relay.

Earning a third place finish was Laura Pumphrey (East Hampton, CT) in the high jump (5-4.5). Gladys Njoku of Stevens Institute of Technology won the event with a clearance of 5-7.75 and Meghan McGowan of Salisbury was second (5-6.5). Oddly enough, Saturday's winning height happens to be the same as Pumphrey's NCAA qualifying mark. All three are expected to receive an invitation to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships being held next weekend in Winston-Salem, NC.

A trio of relays placed fourth. The women's 4x800-meter relay comprised of Maggie LaRoche (Madison, NH), Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY), Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) and Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) closed the women's portion of the meet with a time of 9:44.92 while the 4x400-meter relay team of Harris, Maya Rhinehart (Springfield, MA), Pellegrini and Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) posted a 3:58.42. On the men's side, the 4x800 team of Scott, David Goodrich (North Haven, CT), Zayac and Thomas Kostelak (Bernardsville, NJ) teamed to cross the finish line in a time of 7:52.62.

Individually, Collins was fourth in the 500-meter dash (1:05.63), as Zayac and Roy were fourth (2:30.86) and eighth (2:31.51) in the 1,000-meter run. Strangio added an All-ECAC performance with a fifth-place time of 1:21.20 in the 500-meter dash.

Tevenan was a fraction of a second off another All-ECAC nod with a 5:06.52 in the women's mile and Scott came home 11th (4:24.64) in the men's mile. Pellegrini won her 400-meter dash heat and was 10th overall (59.04). LaRoche posted a 3:07.60 in the 1,000-meter run as Velleca clocked a 26.10 in the 200-meter dash. Ryan Moran (Pembroke, MA) closed out the indoor season with a 8:54.24 in the 3,000-meter run and Jack DeVine (Wilbraham, MA) cleared 6-3.5 in the high jump.

The official NCAA invitations are expected to be revealed by 9am on Monday.
