Women’s Track and Field Secures Coast Guard Invitational Crown

New London, CT --- Three individuals and a relay collected victories as the WPI women's outdoor track and field team captured the Coast Guard Invitational title on Saturday. The Engineers posted 150.50 points to best 11 other teams including NEWMAC foes Springfield (third - 108), Coast Guard (fourth – 90) and Babson (eighth – 26). Wesleyan, who led after the 11 track events were scored, finished second with 123 points.

The track events were conducted at Connecticut College while the field events were contested at the Coast Guard Academy.

Brittney Lambert (Hudson, NH) won the high jump with a clearance of 5-3.75 in her collegiate debut. The mark earned her a spot in the Division III New England and ECAC Championship meets. Abigail McAdams (Oakdale, CT), meanwhile, secured fifth place points with a height of 4-6. Justine Sherman (Boulder, CO) and Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA) finished 1-2 in the 100-meter hurdles with times of 16.49 and 16.66. Anne Harris (Hamburg, NY) broke the tape in the 200-meter dash (26.67) and was followed by Maya Rhinehart (Springfield, MA) in third (26.76). Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT), Pellegrini, Alex Price (Franklin, MA) and Harris opened the session held at Conn College with a 50.05 to take the 4x100-meter relay.

WPI overcame its deficit and pulled ahead after three field events were scored. Lauren Richard (Plymouth, MA) and Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA) highlighted the rally with second and third place efforts in both the triple and long jump. Richard posted marks of 33-6 and 15-7 as Teed trailed with a 33-2.5 and 15-1.25. Andrea Caprio (Tewksbury, MA) chipped in with a third-place 110-2 in the javelin.  In addition to Lambert's win, the Crimson and Gray pulled away third-place efforts by Kate Piotrowicz (Berlin, CT) in the hammer throw (138-5) and Kelsey Leigher (Oxford, MA) in the discus (114-9). Leigher also placed seventh in the hammer (118-8).

Finishing third on the track were Price in the 100-meter dash (13.27), Elizabeth Walfield (Bath, ME) in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12.64) and Emily Newman (Easton, MA) in the 1,500-meter run (5:03.15). Jessica Orr (Westerly, RI) added to the team point total with a sixth-place 5:12.40 in the 1,500m. Harris clocked a 1:01.65 to collect fifth place points and Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) came home eighth (1:03.17) in the 400-meter dash.

Caitlin Walde (Edmonds, WA) completed the 5,000-meter run in a time of 19:17.88, good for sixth place, while Maggie LaRoche (Madison, NH) was sixth in the 800-meter run (2:32.30). Harris, Rhinehart, Pellegrini and Strangio concluded the track events with a sixth-place 4:27.82 in the 4x400-meter relay.

WPI travels to Cambridge on Saturday to face Rensselaer and nationally-ranked MIT at the Engineers Cup.
