Whelan, D'Amore, Staver, Morette Post Victories for Men's Track and Field at Bowdoin

Brunswick, ME --- Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) claimed an individual victory and was the anchor for a winning relay as the WPI men's track and field team placed third at the Bowdoin Invitational Saturday.

The host Polar Bears won with 191 points as RPI was second (184) followed by the Engineers with 168. Wheaton tabulated 10 points and Maine-Farmington came away with six.

Staver turned in a 50.15 to take the 400-meter dash and teamed with Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA), Thomas Mackintosh (Ellington, CT) and Eric Salina (Burlington, MA) to secure the 4x400-meter relay (3:27.03). Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) crossed the finish line first in the 60-meter dash (7.16) followed by Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) in second (7.18) and Jacob Mercier (Litchfield, NH) in third (7.29). D'Amore and Whelan finished 1-2 in the 200-meter dash with times of 23.71 and 23.89, respectively. Connor Morette (Leominster, MA) rounded out the winners with a height of 13-11.75 in the pole vault. David Goodrich (North Haven, CT), Kyle Morrison (York, ME), Tobin Dancy (Shrewsbury, MA) and Remi Gaetjens (Limerick, ME) represented the Engineers in the second-place 4x800-meter relay team with a time of 8:38.27.

The Boynton Hillers amassed eight third-place showings, including Kelly in the 600-meter run (1:25.89), Goodrich in the 800-meter run (2:00.97), Lucas Roy (Bourne, MA) in the 1,000-meter run (2:32.42) and Michael Brady (Medway, MA) in the 3,000-meter run (9:03.74). Nick Dalton (Woburn, MA) took home silver in the 60-meter hurdles (9.49) as the field events saw Keith Guay (Nashua, NH) place third in the high jump (6-0), Matt Bennett (Southington, CT) finish third in the shot put (45-2.5) and Jason Beauregard (New Bedford, MA) take third in the weight throw (48-2.75).

Morrison turned in a fifth-place time in the mile as did Jason Bugarin (Fitchburg, MA) in the 5,000-meter run (16:12.74) and Melvin Moore (Columbus, NJ) in the long jump (19-10.25). Kevin Pawlak (Westford, MA) led the Crimson and Gray with a seventh-place performance in the triple jump (39-9.25).

"We take what we did today, good or bad, learn from it and move forward expecting improvement," remarked Head Coach Brian Chabot. "We have high expectations for both teams by the end of the season so we'll get back to work this week and work towards those goals."

The Engineers trek to the Smith Invitational Saturday.
