Staten Island, NY --- The WPI women's track and field 4x200- and 4x800-meter relay teams set school records as the women tied for 10th and the men tied for 34th at the ECAC Division III Championships hosted by Staten Island on Friday and Saturday. The women totaled 25 points and shared the spot with Bowdoin while the men came up with seven to tie Albright and Worcester State.
The foursome of sophomore Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT), senior Alex Price (Franklin, MA), senior Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA) and sophomore Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA) set the school record in the 4x200-meter relay with a third-place time of 1:43.62. Later in the meet, junior Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY), sophomore Emily Newman (Easton, MA), sophomore Maggie LaRoche (Silverlake, NH), and senior Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) teamed up to take down the 4x800-meter relay record in 9:29.13 to also finish third.
Pellegrini set a new PR on Friday in the 60-meter hurdle prelims (9.07) and clocked a 9.09 to take fourth Saturday. Her time is unofficially tied for 29th on the NCAA Division III performance list. She was also a fraction of a second off another All-ECAC performance (top eight) with a ninth-place 25.69 in the 200-meter dash.
Sophomore Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) ended up fifth in the 800-meter run (2:17.02) while LaRoche was seventh in the 1,000-meter run (3:02.36). The 4x400-meter relay team of Velleca, Price, Pellegrini and Strangio also finished seventh with a time of 3:59.66. Their All-New England All Divisions converted time of 3:56.87 was 18th entering the weekend.
The men's team boasted a pair of All-ECAC performers as sophomore Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) came home third in the 400-meter dash (49.45) and freshman Eric Salina (Burlington, MA) was eighth in the 500-meter dash (1:06.21). Junior Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) set a new PR with a 7.08 in Friday's 60-meter dash prelims.
NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships selections will be revealed Monday morning.
