Women’s Relays Highlight All-NE Performances at NEICAAA Track & Field Championships

New Haven, CT --- The WPI women's track & field 4x800-meter relay team enjoyed a runner up finish in a school record time as the team placed 20th and the men were 31st at the two-day NEICAAA All-New England All-Divisions Championships that concluded Saturday evening at Southern Connecticut State University.

Sophomore Maggie LaRoche (Silverlake, NH), freshman Katie Nugent (Huntington, NY), sophomore Emily Newman (Easton, MA) and sophomore Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) teamed up to clock a 9:15.54 to reset the standard which was previously 9:22.59. The 4x100-meter relay team of senior Alex Price (Franklin, MA), senior Liz Pellegrini (Worcester, MA), freshman Michelle Gencorelli (Andover, MA) and sophomore Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT) turned in the fifth-place time of 47.68. The time is unofficially 10th on the NCAA Division III Performance List. Velleca earned individual All-New England accolades with an eight-place 25.08 in the 200-meter dash finals, an improvement of .04 on her eighth-place prelim time.

On the men's side, juniors Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) and Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA) earned All-New England status with eighth-place times of 3:58.11 and 10.91, respectively.

Velleca was also ninth in the 100-meter dash prelims (12.38), which was .03 shy of another All-New England nod as Price posted a 12.55. Freshman Cole Godzinski (North Reading, MA) sprinted to a PR in the 100-meter hurdles with a 15-flat as Pellegrini was .09 seconds behind. Junior Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) handed in a 1:05.79 in the 400-meter hurdles and graduate student Caitlin Walde (Edmonds, WA) was 11th in the 10,000-meter run (39:34.78).

Graduate student Ryan Moran (Pembroke, MA) added a ninth-place time of 9:32.76 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Eligible student-athletes will have one more chance to qualify for the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the mid-week ECAC Division III Championships which will be conducted Wednesday and Thursday at Westfield State.
