Medford, MA --- Freshman Krystal Grant (Hampden, ME) broke a school record, twice, and qualified for the Division III New England Championships in two different events as the WPI women's track & field team competed at the Tufts Cupid Invitational Saturday. The Engineers also sent select student-athletes to a Division I heavy Armory Track Invitational in New York.

In the competition at Tufts, the region's 12th ranked team faced the likes of No. 1 MIT, regional No. 10 Conn. College and Atlantic Region No. 2 Geneseo. Other teams included Amherst, Brandeis, Wellesley and Wesleyan.

Grant initially posted a record time of 8.03 to win the 60-meter dash prelims and bettered the mark with a second-place 7.98 in the finals. She also clocked a DIII NE qualifying time of 27.07, which was good for third place, in the 200-meter dash. Sophomore Xandria Korn (Woodinville, WA) won the high jump with a clearance of 5-1.75 to tie her previous qualifying mark achieved at Middlebury. Junior Abby McAdams (Montville, CT) was second with a height of 4-11.75.  The 4x200-meter relay team of senior Elizabeth Walfield (Bath, ME), sophomore Cole Godzinski (North Reading, MA), junior Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA) and sophomore Michelle Gencorelli (Andover, MA) also earned gold with a 1:48.70.

Freshman Faye Gauthier (West Warwick, RI) was the runner up in the weight throw (49-4.25) as Godzinski shaved off .10 seconds and a spot from her initial attempt in the 60-meter hurdles to place second in a time of 9.48. The pole vault saw senior Taylor Flaxington (Lincoln, RI) better her PR by nearly six inches, 10-11.75, to tie for fourth. Even though junior Jasmine Higuera Castillo (Riverside, CA) and sophomore Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) placed 14th and 15th in the 5,000-meter run their PR times of 18:48.08 and 18:55.75 earned them entry into the Division III New England competition.

Rookie Aleye Momodu (Milford, MA) was fifth in the shot put (33-7.25) while McAdams did the same in the 400-meter dash (1:04.23). Walfield and Godzinski were sixth and seventh in the 200-meter dash and Teed moved from seventh in the prelims to sixth in the finals with identical times of 8.34 in the 60-meter dash. Teed represented the Engineers in the long jump (ninth, 15-2.25) and Halfrey was 13th in the 3,000-meter run (10:56.70). Junior Emma MacIntyre (Grand Island, NY) competed in the 1,000-meter run while sophomore Carley Dykstra (Andover, NJ) contested the triple jump.

Meanwhile in New York, WPI was one of a handful of Division III schools hoping to take advantage of the competitive setting. Junior Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) 30th of 59 in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.62. Freshman Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) wasn't far behind with a 36th-place 2:22.05 while junior Emily Newman (Easton, MA) was the quickest Boynton Hiller in the mile with a 24th-place 5:18.40.
