Jumps, Throws & 4x800m Key Women’s Track & Field’s Victory at Amherst

Amherst, MA --- Four field individuals and a relay collected wins as the WPI women's track & field team finished first at the Amherst Spring Fling Saturday.

The Engineers, ranked 10th in the region, totaled 89 points to edge out Wheaton who amassed 87 points. The hosts were third (73) while representatives from regional No. 2 Middlebury (72), Brandeis (35), Wesleyan (35) and national No. 1 Williams (17) followed.

Senior Kirsten Herchenroder (Plaistow, NH) was the top collegiate performer in the discus with a winning distance of 104-4 as freshman Elizabeth Kirschner (Hamilton, MA) claimed the long jump with a leap of 16-2.5. Senior Brittney Lambert (Hudson, NH) cleared 5-2.5 to secure the high jump, and rocket to the top of the NEWMAC performance list, and junior Kendra O'Malley (Charlton, MA) sent the hammer 138-1.

The 4x800-meter relay team of freshman Lauren Kaija (Reading, VT), senior Emily Newman (Easton, MA), sophomore Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) and senior Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) not only defeated Wesleyan in a head-to-head matchup with a time of 9:42.97 but took the lead based on events scored heading into the race.

Freshman Allison Kloeckner (Shelburne, VT) took sixth (88) in the discus and classmate Hannah Schulz (Berlin, CT) was sixth in the long jump (15-4.75). Senior Abby McAdams (Montville, CT) was fifth in the high jump (4-10.5) while sophomore Faye Gauthier (West Warwick, RI) and Herchenroder were fourth (130-10) and fifth (125) in the hammer throw.

Senior Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT), senior Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA), freshman Arden Tanner (Ventura, CA) and freshman Katy Nippert (Salem, NH) were just .2 seconds behind the Lyons in the two-team 4x100-meter relay with a time of 50.18. Tanner and Teed were also second (12.83) and third (12.91) in the 100-meter dash. Packard, junior Katie Nugent (Huntington, CT) and Strangio, meanwhile, finished second (1:01.09), third (1:01.68) and fourth (1:02.33) in the 400-meter dash.

The pole vault featured junior Carley Dykstra (Andover, NJ) in second with a height of 10-2 and sophomore Carlisle Ferguson (Harvard, MA) in sixth (9-0.25). Junior Xandria Korn (Woodinville, WA) also achieved a 9-0.25 but landed seventh due to tiebreakers. Tanner added a third place time of 26.72 in the 200-meter dash and was just .05 seconds ahead of Velleca who claimed fourth.

McAdams finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a 16.84 while freshman Abby McGahey (Canandaigua, NY) was fifth in the triple jump (31-11.5) and Newman was sixth in the 1,500-meter run (5:00.37).

The Engineers head to Conn. College Friday for the Elite Distance portion of the Silfen Invitational and return Saturday for the remainder of the competition.
