New London, CT --- Senior Antoine Harris (Southington, CT) won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and was part of the winning 4x100-meter relay team as the WPI men's track & field team won the two-day Connecticut College Silfen Track & Field Invitational. Senior Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH) reclaimed the 800-meter run record.
The sixth-ranked team in New England posted 97.5 points. No. 19 Middlebury was second with 85.5 while Division II East No. 11 New Haven was third (73), Bowdoin was fourth (66) and Tufts, the top ranked team in the region, was fifth (59). The field also included regional No. 8 Coast Guard (8th – 57pts), regional No. 5 Amherst (10th – 48), and a select group from Division II East No. 13 Franklin Pierce.
Harris and junior Alex Rus (Newton, MA), who finished sixth, gained entry to the Division III New England Championships with their point-producing times of 10.92 and 11.09, respectively, in the 100m. The 200m saw Harris clock a 22-flat, followed by Rus in fourth (22.39) and sophomore Matt Adiletta (Bolton, MA) in sixth (22.51). Both Harris and Adiletta can now join Rus, who had a faster time last week, at the regional meet. As a group, junior Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH), Rus, Adiletta and Harris collaborated for a winning time of 42.19 in the 4x100m.
Junior Matt Jankowski (Burlington, MA) claimed third in the shot put with a heave of 44-2.75 as junior Quinton Schimmel (Monroe Township, NJ) improved his D3NE time with a third-place 57.35. He was followed by classmate Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) in seventh (59.24).
Wittenberg finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.83 while sophomore Ben Steeves (Hollis, ME), who held the record for two weeks, also bested his previous standard with a seventh-place 1:54.46. Friday night's elite distance events also saw freshman Brian Brooks (Brewster, MA) hand in the seventh-place 3:59.07 in the 1,500-meter run. Senior Michael Brady (Medway, MA) established a new personal best of 15:12.74 in the 5,000-meter run while freshman Nate Meyer (Princeton, MA) also took part in the 800m. Brooks also clocked a D3NE qualifying time of 15:22.60 in the 5,000m on Saturday.
Junior Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA), sophomore Malek Elshakhs (Storrs, CT) and sophomore Mark Bray (Shrewsbury, MA) were fourth (15.86), fifth (15.87) and sixth (16.01) in the 110-meter high hurdles. Freshman Mike Reilly (Stoneham, MA), bolstered by a personal-best 31-4.5 in the shot put, amassed 5,188 in the two-day decathlon, which was good for fifth. Junior Mike Corace (Spotswood, NJ) added a fifth-place toss of 152-10 in the javelin.
Sophomore Nathaniel Shimkus (Hope Valley, RI) gained entry into the regional meet with a sixth-place 13-5.25 in the pole vault while senior Lucas Gagne (Franklin, NH) was sixth in the discus (132-4). Junior Garth Hull (Arlington, MA) tied for seventh in the high jump with a clearance of 5-10.75.
WPI heads to Williamstown Saturday to compete against Williams and No. 19 Middlebury.
