Whitney Wins Long Jump as Men’s Track & Field Competes at Williams

Williamstown, MA --- Freshman Andrew Whitney (North Kingston, RI) captured the long jump while the 4x100-meter relay team also tasted victory as the WPI men's track & field team was in action Saturday at Williams.

WPI, the fifth-ranked team in New England, and Williams, the seventh-ranked team in Division III, were joined by No. 17 RPI and No. 25 Middlebury.

Whitney leaped 20-5.25 as junior Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH) took third (20-3) and senior Kevin Pawlak (Westford, MA) secured fifth (19-9.5). The quartet of sophomore Matt Adiletta (Bolton, MA), junior Alex Rus (Newton, MA), junior William Kopellas (Needham, MA) and senior Antoine Harris (Southington, CT) defeated Middlebury (42.42) in a head-to-head matchup with a 41.73.

Junior Quinton Schimmel (Monroe Township, NJ) placed second in the 400-meter hurdles (57.82) while freshman Anthony Algieri (Nutley, NJ) was second with a Division III New England qualifying 15.81 in the 110-meter hurdles. He was followed by junior Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) with a third-place 15.90. Rus (49.47) was the runner up in the 400-meter dash while Harris and sophomore Ben Steeves (Hollis, ME) were fifth and sixth with D3 NE entry times of 49.85 and 50.62.

Sophomore Johann Bradley (Slidell, LA) improved on his prior regional qualifying performances with a PR of 15-5, which was good for second in the pole vault. Classmate Nathaniel Shimkus (Hope Valley, RI), meanwhile, tied for ninth (12-5.5). Both Adiletta and junior Mike Corace (Spotswood, NJ) also improved on earlier marks with a third-place 200-meter dash (22.19) and javelin toss (170-3), respectively. Senior Evan Bossio (Pittsfield, MA) and Algieri placed eighth (149-6) and ninth (143-8) in the javelin. Junior Garth Hull (Arlington, MA) and freshman Mike Reilly (Stoneham, MA) each cleared 6-0 in the high jump and finished third and tied for fourth. Sophomore Mark Bray (Shrewsbury, MA) finished sixth (5-10) and Pawlak was eighth (5-8).

Senior Lucas Gagne (Franklin, NH) registered a fourth-place discus throw of 133-2. Graduate student Kyle Gerlach (Smithfield, RI) posted a fifth-place 10:07.58 to earn a spot in the Division III New England meet while Fleury clocked a fifth-place 11.77 in the 100-meter dash. Freshman Owen Lally (Lebanon, CT) can enter the 800-meter run at the regional event as he crossed the finish line in 1:57.03, which was good for fifth. Freshman Brian Brooks (Brewster, MA), junior Kevin O'Driscoll (Norwell, MA) and freshman Nate Meyer (Princeton, MA) were seventh (1:58.23), eighth (1:58.53) and ninth (1:59.18).

Shimkus was also sixth in the triple jump (38-2) while sophomore Sullivan Boyd (Woolwich, ME) was sixth in the hammer (136-9). Junior Matt Jankowski (Burlington, MA) was seventh in the shot put (42-6) followed by freshman Sam Furman (Groton, MA) with a ninth-place 40-8.25.

The Engineers head to Springfield Saturday for the NEWMAC Championships.
