Relays Deliver for Men's Track and Field at Tufts Cupid Challenge

Medford, MA --- WPI men's track and field saw a pair of relays register top three finishes as the Engineers competed in the 2020 Cupid Challenge hosted by Tufts where the Crimson and Gray competed against MIT, UMass Lowell, Brandeis, Wesleyan, Trinity, Amherst, Middlebury, American International and Connecticut College in the non-scoring event. 

The Engineers opened the day with a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash when Alex Rus (Newton, MA) ran the event in 22.75 seconds. The success continued into the 5000-meter run when David Reynolds (Andover, NH) took seventh in a time of 15:08.29. 

Two WPI athletes finished in the top-five of the 60-meter hurdles with Nichols Fiorenza (Oakton, VA) leading the way in second in 8.58 followed by teammate Malek ElShakhs (Storrs, CT) in fifth in 8.77 seconds. The Engineers also placed second in the 4x400 meter relay with a team composed of Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH), Quinton Schimmel (Monroe Township, NJ), Rus and Andrew Whitney (North Kingston, RI) who ran the event in 3:25.41. 

The track events ended with a third-place finish in the distance medley when a team composed of Tom Hanlon (Derry, NH), Nate Meyer (Princeton, MA), Ben Steeves (Hollis, ME) and Brian Brooks (Brewster, MA) finished in 10:10.50.  That time currently is the second best in all of NCAA Division III.

The field events were a strong point for the Engineers with six top-ten finishes. In the high jump, Garth Hull (Arlington, MA) took ninth with a height of 1.85 meters and was followed by Isaac Frederique (Methuen, MA) who took tenth with a height of 1.80 meters. Frederique also took tenth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.79 meters. 

Johann Bradley (Slidell, LA) finished second in the pole vault with a height of 4.45 meters while William Kopellas (Needham, MA) took fourth in the long jump in 6.68 meters. Tyler Guertin (Holyoke, MA) finished the day for the Engineers with a tenth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 13.29 meters. 

The Crimson and Gray have a busy day next Saturday, competing in the BU Valentine Invitational and participating in the Williams for the Field & Track Invitational.
