Medford, MA --- Skylar Barthelmes (Dartmouth, MA) achieved a pair of school record distances as WPI men's and women's track and field teams closed out the 2021 outdoor regular by competing in the Tufts Final Qualifier on Thursday afternoon.
Barthelmes reset her own records in the hammer throw (168-3) and the discuss (137-4) en route to winning both events. The graduate student currently sits 26th and 35th respectively in the two events nationwide.
The 4x100 meter women's relay of Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA), Janelle Knight (Santa Barbara, CA), Vivienne Evans (Newtown Square, PA) and Katy Nippert (Salem, NH) clocked a time of 47.72 and placed second. In other women's sprint races, Knight was second in the 200 meters (season best - 25.26), Pawlak sixth (12.43 in the finals, 12.33 in the prelims), Nippert seventh (12.61) and Arden Tanner (Ventura, CA) eighth (12.61) in the 100 meters.
Abby McGahey (Canandaigua, NY) improved her season mark in the triple jump with a second place leap of 38.1.25. The senior is currently 23rd nationwide with the top 19 entered marks qualifying for next week's NCAA Championships in Greensboro, NC. Classmate Elizabeth Kirschner (Hamilton, MA) was fifth Thursday with a distance of 36-7.50.
On the men's side, four Crimson and Gray runners competed. Senior Tom Hanlon (Derry, NH) closed out a standout career with a fifth-place showing in the 1,500 meters (3:57.26). He was quickly followed junior Brian Brooks (Brewster, MA) in sixth (3:59.16) and classmate Ben Steeves (Hollis, ME) in seventh (4:00.06). Sophomore Nichols Fiorenza (Oakton, VA) finished third in the 110 meter hurdles.
The 2021 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship selections are slated to be announced late Friday evening. The women's 4x100 relay, Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) in the women's 800 and 1,500 and men's 110 meter hurdlers Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH) and Malek ElShakhs (Storrs, CT) should be accepted into the meet while McGahey and Barthelmes will learn if they are on the right side of their respective bubbles.
