Thomas Sets School Record to Lead Men’s Track and Field at URI

Oliver Thomas - WPI Track & Field 2022

Kingston, RI --- Paced by a school record performance from graduate student Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH), the WPI men's track and field team had a successful day competing at the URI Coach's Invitational on Saturday.

Thomas broke his own school record in the 60 meter hurdles twice at the event. In prelims, he went 8.07, topping his 8.08 second school record from 2019. He again bested his mark in the finals, winning the event in a blistering 8.03 seconds. Thomas, already a three-time All-American, has the second fastest mark in all of NCAA Division III this season so far.

Thomas also led off the 4 x 400 meter relay team that took second place overall. He combined with Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT), Nate Meyer (Princeton, MA), and Benjamin Steeves (Hollis, ME) for a time of 3:28.03.

Overall, Engineers accounted for 15 total top-10 finishes, including six top-five marks.

Aside from the relay finish, Steeves, Andrew, and Meyer also shined in individual events. Steeves was the runner-up in the 500 meter run in 1:07.79, while Andrew was fifth in the triple jump (12.91m) and Meyer was fifth in the 400 meter dash in 52.07 seconds. Matthew Catuccio (Trumbull, CT) concluded the top five finishes for the Engineers, taking fifth in the high jump in 1.86m.

Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA) was sixth for WPI in the 3000 meter run in 8:56.35, while Owen Lally (Lebanon, CT) rounded out the track highlights with an eighth place finish in the 800 meter run (2:03.66).

Three successful field efforts wrapped up the meet highlights for the Engineers. Andrew Sifferlen (Sudbury, MA) was eighth in the long jump (6.48m), Jack Adiletta (Bolton, MA) was eighth in the triple jump (11.83m) and Will Pagliarulo (Bedford, NH) was eighth in the high jump (1.86m).

Two events are on tap for WPI next weekend. On Saturday, members of the team will compete at the BU Terrier Invitational, while other Engineers will take part in the two day Tufts Branwen Smith-King Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
