Medford, MA --- A pair of program records was the story for WPI men's track and field team this weekend, as the Engineers competed at both Tufts' Branwen Smith-King Invitational and BU's Terrier Invitational.
At BU, Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH) broke his own school record twice. He went 8.03 in the prelims and bettered that with a 7.99 in the finals to place second overall. His time is the fastest in the nation in Division III this season.
A second program record was blemished by junior David Reynolds (Andover, NH) who set the new school standard for the 5k with a time of 14:54.48. The previous record was 14:57.12 in 2002 and was held by Justin Lutz '02 going into today's performance by Reynolds.
Robert Dec (West Springfield, MA) recorded a fourth-place finish in the 400m with a 53.56 time. Dec and Thomas teamed up in the 4 x 400m relay team that placed second overall at Tufts. The two combined with Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT) and Nicholas Fiorenza (Oakton, VA) to run a time of 3:29.74.
Two Engineers recorded wins at the Tufts - Ryan Fischer (Merrimack, NH) and Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA). Fischer won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:02.38, while Bissoondial was the mile champ, recording a 4:28.08.
Also in the mile, WPI runners accounted for three other top-five finishes. Alex Simoneau (Attleboro, MA) was the runner-up in a time of 4:30.25, while Sean Corman (Waterford, CT) was fourth in 4:38.24 and Jarrett Gulden (South Bristol, ME) was fifth in 4:39.91.
Two Engineers finished in the top five in the 60-meter hurdles, as Fiorenza was second in 8.39, while Anthony Algieri (Nutley, NJ) ranked third with a time of 8.65.
Rounding out the highlights for WPI at Tufts was a trio of fifth-place finishes in field events. Andrew Sifferlen (Sudbury, MA) was fifth in the high jump with a 1.85m attempt, Matt Gadziala (Clinton, NY) fifth in the pole vault (4.00m), and Fischer was fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:02.38.
Wrapping up the action at BU, Benjamin Steeves (Hollis, ME) and Brian Brooks (Brewster, MA) raced in the mile with Steeves finishing in 4:13.87 and Brooks in 4:14.80. Andrew raced in the 400m, finishing in 51.07, while Owen Lally (Lebanon, CT) went 1:57.41 in the 800m.
WPI will head back to Tufts next weekend for the two-day Cupid Invitational.
