WPI Women’s Track and Field Takes Third at Tufts

Medford, MA --- The WPI women's track and field team picked up three wins and a third place team finish competing at Tufts' Branwen Smith-King Invitational on Sunday at the Gantcher Center. 

WPI was behind only MIT and host Tufts in the final point standings, backed by an individual win from Deidra Anderson (Billerica, MA) and a pair of relay victories. Anderson won the 800, topping the field with a time of 2:26.51, notching a DIII New England qualifying time. 

In the relay events, WPI's 4x200m team of Vivienne Evans (Newtown Square, PA), Janelle Knight (Santa Barbara, CA), Katy Nippert (Salem, NH), and Jazmyn Ewing (Worcester, MA) recorded a winning time of 1:46.19. In the 4x400m, Nippert, Knight, Leithsa Dimanche (Billerica, MA), and Isabel Hallal (Foxboro, MA) teamed up to win with a 4:06.67. 

Three runner-up finishes also highlighted the Tufts meet for the Engineers. Hallal was second in the 400m dash with a time of 1:03.50, while Caitlin Guilfoyle was second in the mile in 5:14.86, and Sarah Ossing was second in the 5000 (19:14.05.) 

Four other WPI student-athletes tallied podium finishes. On the track side, Abby Hodges (North Easton, MA) was third in the 600m in 1:46.07 and Sarah Doherty (Goffstown, NH) placed third in the 5000 in 19:38.31. In the field events, Amanda Borden (Sherborn, MA) took third in the high jump with a best effort of 1.56m, while Kathryn Butziger (East Greenwich, RI) placed third in the long jump, going 4.85m. 

Nicole Whipkey (Portland, ME) and Ewing wrapped up the top five track finishers for the Engineers. Whipkey was fourth in the 200m dash in 27.44, while Ewing took fourth in the 1000 in 3:13.27. 

Closing out the field highlights were three top five marks, led by a fourth place finish from Elizabeth Matticoli (South Brunswick, NJ) in the shot put (10.91m). Elsewhere, Olivia Spielberger (Hingham, MA) was fifth in the triple jump (10.55m) and Morgan Collins (Hudson, MA) took fifth in the weight throw (12.65m). 

The Engineers will race next weekend at Tufts once again, competing in the Cupid Invitational beginning at 9am.
